Travel – The Grand Tour and Tourism 

Did not start with the Grand Tour and finish with tourism for the masses

Grand Tour Presentation – on email      

Modern parallels – Boswell trying to find his purpose in life is like the typical Gap Year Normally undertaken by those with independent means like backpackers Tacitus? – the idea of othering – admiring of the culture that was, much like during the Grand Tour where comments on the smell and poverty of the Mediterranean is often commented upon Religion as a divider – Scotland for one example – religious identity was very important The Grand Tour was so expensive as they were the “American” tourists of the time so could be charged more, they were also bringing carriages, servants and chaperones Why did the Grand Tour ignore Greece? – not seen as quite so classical? Elgin marbles? At the beginning of the Renaissance, Greek was fashionable, however it did start to fall out of it as it stopped moving forward culturally – real stuff was Greece as Wincklemann argued, but the Roman copies of Greek originals were more easily accessed and fashionable

The Backpacker and Gap Yah 

Jack and Phipps – tourism and intercultural exchange – exchange is a key aspect in tourism and travel provides a greater connection and improves social relations – it sells a different type of time, a slower pace of life and a want of “the Other”. “Tourism as a mundane practise shows us that life does not have to be exotic to make big changes in how we share it and in how we think of ourselves.” Modern tourism and consumerism – Berghoff states that the industry boomed after WWII as there was no plight, people thought life was short and carefree spending was more possible. It has become so common to holiday in this culture that it is almost “deviant behaviour” not to. It has led to other industries such as mass souvenir and cameras – symbolic value and a trophy (like a painting brought back from a Grand Tour). Some artificial places have been built like Vegas and the link to Grand Tour could be finding the appeal of nature and idealised landscapes to purge from corrupting forces of civilisation. – there is a question over how much tourists actually engage with the culture as often safety is a focus and this is where the tourist stereotype stems from Harrison – being a tourist – takes the idea of the stereotype further as a camera toting fool – a traveller is someone who seeks adventure or relaxation and the thrill of a new experience – most of the people she interviewed were the children of immigrants, marries to immigrants or immigrants themselves meaning there was an innate picture in their mind of other places – official bodies endorsed travel intent on helping emerging postcolonial states gain financial stability but it can have downsides – environmental but also a native Antiguan described tourists as “rude, arrogant and insensitive to the reality of their impact in Antigua” What is the true difference between tourism and travel? Time? Commercial viability? Group or alone? Where you visit?

Tourism can often be a last resort for a region – Cornwall post mining collapse – looking at aesthetics, one of Boswell’s first moves in Naples was to go to Vesuvius which was a new experience The Global Nomad has a lot of statistics that could be useful – distinction between backpackers, travellers and tourists Impact of social media? Pearce defines backpackers as having a preference for budget accommodation, want to meet other travellers, independent and flexible travel schedule, longer holiday and more information holiday activities Importance of backpacker employment in Australia – looking at the Harvest trail There are now package holidays for backpackers – runs counter to some definitions

Boswell’s text – crucial 

Bit of a groupie for famous people and attaches himself to them

Influence of travel         

Old travel writing inspired people to travel, as social media does now Wanting to experience a new culture is linked to the work ethnographers used to do Photos are seen as proof of holidays now, much like paintings and artefacts were from the Grand Tour – proof of travel means it is a brag Cultural bragging? – Polo and bragging? The scale of travel has changed hugely There are no “new lands” to discover and it is common for people to travel very easily Reasons behind travel are very different now – see thing vs tan? Pilgrimage can just be travel to a region that is important to you Bucket list culture – just try to travel to as many places as possible before you can...
