The Great Carbuncle by Nathaniel Hawthorne

- The story begins with a trip to the mountains where the adventurers stay.! - They are on the rugged side of the Crystal Hills.! - The gathering took place at nightfall.! - We are introduced to eight characters: The Seeker, Doctor Cacaphodel, Master Ichabod Pigsnort, The Cynic, the poet, Lord de Vere, Mathew and Hannah.!

- They are all seeking the Great Carbuncle, a magic gem.! - It creates a tense atmosphere because they are in a competition.! - It’s Hannah and Mathew who find the stone but they decided to leave it where it is because they thought it was too shiny for their household.!

- Everyone is so eager to get this treasure, they couldn’t care less of Hannah and Mathew not waking up.!

- This story is told with a third person point of view.! - There is characterization : «"The eldest of the group, a tall, lean, weather-beaten man. Some sixty years of age, was clad in the skins of wild animals"» line 28!

- An imagery : at nightfall, once in the olden time, on the rugged side of one of the Crystal Hills, a party of adventurers were refreshing themselves"» line 5! Theme : jealousy, competition, selfishness! All the names aren’t pleasant to wear (Cacaphodel, Pigsnort, etc )! It’s a re-written tale that first belong to Native Americans.(you take a tale that already exist but you write it differently = why?)!

- It is a quest story, meaning that every characters have a different idea of the Great Carbuncle.! - This is a religious text, at some point they are above the clouds, above the fog! - Symbols: light is important (hope, God, beauty, knowledge, guidance)! Nature: weather (cold, clouds, fog) , plants), nature is never dangerous here! Matthew and Hannah have an equal relationship: when one is timid the other is stronger and vice versa!...
