Description

The Great Gatsby Fitzgerald wrote “The Great Gatsby” during a trip in Paris. The novel is set in New York and the story is told by Nick Carraway, a work’s character who moved from the West to the East. Nick’s next-door neighbor is a mysterious man named Jay Gatsby. He is rich and attractive with some secret hidden in his past. We can compare this figure with a romantic hero or with a self made man who tries to recreate his past without favorable results. Carraway in fact learns that Gatsby and his cousin Daisy had been in love, but that the woman had not waited for him to return from the war and had married another man. Nick arranges a meeting between the two. At the same time Daisy’s husband, Tom is involved in an affair with Myrtle but he becomes jealous of Gatsby’s attentions to his wife. Myrtle is killed by Daisy in a car accident, and Tom tells that Gatsby is responsible. The protagonist is killed but nobody is present at the funeral except the only honest figure of the work: Nick. He is Fitzgerald’s spokesman in his representation of the decay of his generation. Only Nick truly sees, all the other characters in fact are blind and corrupted by the desire of materialism. In the work there are a lot of symbols that describe the moral vacuity of a postwar society like “the valley of ashes” that represents the spiritual sterility of America that is obsessed with wealth and status. In the story Daisy is considered the object of desire, the American dream that is destined to fail....
