Description

The Hobbit Mandala Mandala is a Sanskrit word meaning unity. You can use words which apply to any of the major characters from The Hobbit linking your mandala directly to the novel. Directions 1.

You should write 5 words that show visual imagery, 5 tactile, etc. These should be words that you find within the text of The Hobbit. These words should be concrete and specific. The abstraction is one word which should represent the novel itself. * The free words are any extra words you like for whatever reason.

2.

The next step is the mandala itself. You draw a circle on a blank piece of paper (no notebook paper allowed). You choose a picture (drawn or traced-no cutouts) and put it in the center. This picture should represent some aspect of the novel.

3.

Arrange all 25 imagery words inside the circle. The words can be randomly placed or can be arranged in patterns. The words may graphically make up the picture itself. No single word need be stressed.

4.

Your mandala must use colors.

5.

Each student will upload a picture of the mandala into the OMS.

*An abstraction is a concept, something that cannot be seen or touched, such as love, faithfulness, independence, courage, etc.

Guidelines for the Student: Certain chapters lend themselves to “finding” words if you are struggling. For instance:      

Chapter 4 - Over Hill and Under Hill – description of mountain passes and storm Chapter 5 end of the chapter – Riddles in the Dark – sound imagery as Biblo escapes the tunnel Chapter 8 - Flies and Spiders – description of Mirkwood Chapter 10 – A Warm Welcome – description of Lake-town Chapter 13 – Not at Home – Bilbo finds the Arkenstone Chapter 17 – The Cloud Burst – description of the Battle of Five Armies

Stick figures are acceptable as long as they are recognizable and you can certainly employ your skills at tracing something appropriate for the center of their mandala.

If you need further ideas: a map, a dragon, a troll, a hobbit, Mirkwood or The Lonely Mountain, etc. There are endless possibilities for creating your mandala....
