The Human Cost of an Illiterate Society by Jonathan Kozol. Notes (Pg. 226-234) Do we really want illiterate adults choosing who the next leader of our county is? Illiterate people cannot read traffic sings, or follow a specified path or route to get to their destination. This makes them a HUGE danger to society and the drivers on the roads. If an illiterate person cannot differentiate a “maximum 100km/h sign to a maximum 30km/h sign” that person is capable of causing mass amounts of damage. It is very easy to cheat an illiterate person, since they cannot understand numbers and letters, any person that the illiterate society trusts, can easily fraud them with their bills, taxes, etc. Even if you think that an illiterate person can hold down a job, they cant. If you are a janitor, you still need to read and write, if a person leaves you a note saying “clean so and so” you won’t be able to read it ...
