The Iliad Books 13-16 HUMN115 Troy and the Trojan War 1.Why could Poseidon not help the Greeks openly? Poseidon could not openly help the Greeks in fear of drawing Zeus’ wrath. Poseidon instead had to come up with different ways to help without drawing the attention of Zeus. 2. What is happening between Hector and Paris in book 13? Hector gets Paris and tries to gather his men, however when arriving, everyone is wounded or dead. Hector and Paris have a discussion about the state of the men, and Hector is reassured by Paris’ saying that not all are dead; Zeus has spared others. 3. Why do Agamemnon, Odysseus, and Diomedes return to the fighting at this point? Agamemnon suggests giving up after seeing the state of the war effort, but Odysseus and Diomedes still want to help and find that if they give up, it would be a cowardly action. They continue to fight, and Agamemnon is reassured by Poseidon. 4.How do the gods/goddesses interfere in the battle? What does Hera do to help the Greeks? Give specific details. Some examples of the gods/ goddesses interfering in the battle are when Apollo helps Hector by renewing his men, Zeus saves Hector by making a weapon fail when it is aimed towards Hector and Zeus kills Patroclus. Hera on the other hand attempts to help the Greeks by having Zeus sleep to avoid his helping of the Trojans. 5. When Zeus discovers what has transpired, what does he remind Hera about? When Zeus discovers what Hera has done, he reminds her of a previous punishment, that works as both a threat and a method of discouragement from interfering. 6. What is the difference between ancient fiction and today's fiction? The difference between ancient and today’s fiction is how focused ancient fiction was on gods. Today fiction tends to be centered away from having any religious connotations. 7.How does Patroclus convince Achilles to allow him to wear his armor? Achilles agreed to give Patroclus his armor only under the condition that it was used just long enough to ensure the ship's safety. 8. What instructions does Achilles give Patroclus about fighting the Trojans? Achilles instructions Patroclus not to allow the fighting to enter Troy as to avoid the gods getting involved in the battle.

Achilles prays that Zeus give Patroclus strength in battle and allow him to return safely, Zeus decides to give Patroclus strength but does not honor the second part of Achilles request. 10.Patroclus disobeys Achilles. What does he do and what happens to him and by whom? Patroclus disobeys Achilles by continuing his attack on the Trojans and pushing towards Troy. Apollo gravely wounds him allowing Hector to come in and kill Patroclus and with his dying words, he tells Hector about his impending death. 11. What does Patroclus tell Hector? Patroclus is able to tell Hector before dying, that he will be killed by Achilles....
