The Importance Of Biology...

Description

The Importance Of Biology Biology is the science of life or living matter in all forms and phenomena, especially with reference to origin, growth, reproduction, structure and behavior. Living beings have the desire to discover who they truly are and how they came to be the person that they are today. Many people have specific beliefs in an ultimate being that rules over all else, but most of these beliefs cannot be proven. The study of biology is based upon facts and hypotheses that can be tested and supported. Without biology it would be difficult to understand the beauty of life, and how living organisms are created and how the basic metabolic processes help organisms survive. Biology is one of the most important human endeavors since it provides humans with the hard facts and beauty of all life and how it came to be. Truth is defined as a verified or indisputable fact, proposition, or principle. Truth is the reason why biology is the most important human endeavor when being compared to art or religion. Religion is not based on truth or facts, but rather upon beliefs and faith. Of course there is nothing wrong with believing in a higher power or an ultimate being, but most of the time these things cannot be proven. Historically,

the events in the Bible did occur, yet there has never been evidence of a god or an individual creator of the world. Art is similar to religion in the way that it is not concrete or factual. There are many different types of art. Art can be portrayed through a painting, drawing, photograph, or sculpture, and while some of these pieces can be related to a factual event, most pieces are abstract. Artists are very creative and they express their emotions through their art. Abstract and concrete are two totally different terms. If something is abstract then it is theoretical or not practical however, when something is concrete it is relating to something that is concerned with realities or an instance that actually occurred. There is beauty found in art and religion, but truth is lacking in these endeavors. Art is a beautiful thing, and so is religion. Looking at a beautiful piece of art can bring a sense of joy to someone, and believing in a higher power is also an exceedingly beautiful thing, but nothing can compare to the beauty of biology. True beauty is found when someone brings a new human into this world, or when there are medical advancements that can give patients with cancer a chance at a longer life, or becoming aware of how organisms have evolved, or understanding the processes that occur

inside the body in order to live. The beauty about life is that each and every multicellular living being on this planet was created by a sperm cell fertilizing an egg cell to form a zygote. Once the zygote is formed a processes knows as mitosis allows the zygote to develop cells, tissue, and organ systems until all of the proper systems necessary for survival are formed (Witz BW 2004). Conceiving a baby is one of the most beautiful things life could bring someone, and biology is to thank for that. Without the study of biology, it would be quite difficult to understand how individuals are made. Evolution is another way that biology brings beauty into the world. Understanding how humans and other organisms have evolved is fascinating. Charles Darwin was the individual who developed the theory of natural selection. Natural selection is “the process by which species become better adapted to their local environments” (Witz BW 2004). Darwin arrived at this statement by observing the biological structures of organisms, formulating a hypothesis, testing his hypothesis and then using the evidence he discovered to support his hypothesis. Understanding how organisms stay alive is also another way that the beauty of biology differs from the beauty found in art and religion. For example, the human body undergoes many important biological

processes in order to keep that individual alive. Each and every day living organisms depend on the processes that occur inside microscopic cells. One process that is beneficial to both plants and animals is photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is a process that occurs in chloroplasts within a plant and converts energy from the sun into chemical energy. Photosynthesis is essential to plants because it produces glucose that is beneficial to the plants and oxygen that is essential for all other living organisms. If plants were unable to use carbon dioxide to produce oxygen, then living beings would not be able to survive. The reason why this process is so beautiful is because it takes place in an organelle about ten micrometers long and provides the necessities for organisms to remain alive (Witz BW 2004). Another way that the beauty of biology is different from the beauty found in art, religion, or other endeavors is that living things rely upon microscopic organelles and processes to keep them from dying without cause. Biology has allowed for the understanding of what nutrients are imperative in maintaining a healthy and long lasting life. There are four types of macromolecules that organisms depend on. These macromolecules include carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids. Carbohydrates are essential in getting the proper sugars such as glucose, sucrose, and fructose. Lipids give an organism cushion

and protection, but most importantly lipids give organisms energy. Another essential macromolecule are proteins. Proteins are made up of amino acids and they allow the cells inside the body to function properly. Nucleic acids are most definitely the most important macromolecule inside the body. Deoxyribose nucleic acid, or DNA, and ribonucleic acid, or RNA, are the two nucleic acids found inside the body. They are so imperative because they code for the production of proteins and more importantly DNA and RNA allow each living organism to be uniquely different from each other (Witz BW 2004). Overall biology provides a great amount of beauty because it allows people to understand life on a cellular level. Biology is based on evidence and factual information, which is another example of how art and religion differ from biology. In biology, scientists use the scientific method in order to arrive at a scientific conclusion. The first step in the scientific method is making observations. Next, a hypothesis should be formulated in support of the observations that were made. Once a hypothesis has been developed, it should be tested. If the hypothesis is supported by the test, then it is advised that the test is repeated several times to be sure that it definitely supports the hypothesis. If the test refutes the

hypothesis however, then a new hypothesis should be formulated in order to correlate with the results of the test. Once the hypothesis fully supports the test, then a scientific theory can be formulated. The scientific method relies on hypothetico-deductive reasoning, observations, and facts (Reece JB et al. 2014). This is the main reason why biology is different from art and religion. Individuals want to have the ability to understand who they are and how they got to be the way that they are. Although religion can provide some reasons as to how humans and other organisms came to be on earth, and art can provide many different forms of beauty, biology lays the foundation for truth and beauty found in life. Biology is one of the most important human endeavors because it allows for a greater understanding of life on earth. Art and religion are also meaningful endeavors because they provide faith, hope, and creativity. This provides some truth and some beauty, but the real beauty and truth in life comes from knowledge and understanding. Knowledge comes from the studying of living organisms and understanding the processes that occur in living organisms provide truth and allow us to accept life as it truly is and find the beauty within ourselves....
