Anton Chekhov’s “The Lady with the Pet Dog” Homework Assignment (1-2 pages) In this class, as in most of your academic and professional experiences hereafter, you will be asked to write persuasively on a variety of topics. The persuasiveness of our argument chiefly depends on our ability to close read and interpret language and explain that interpretation. This skill is essential not only for the literary essays you will write in your academic career but also for your future professional writing. This homework assignment will help you practice the skill required to write persuasively. I.

Scholars have not been able to reach a consensus about the meaning of Anton Chekhov's final sentence in "The Lady with the Pet Dog."

Choose one of the two thesis statements below and support it with evidence from the text in one to three paragraphs. Thesis Statement I: The final sentence of the story confirms that the love between Gurov and Anna is unlike any they have experienced before, and, while they will have trouble renouncing their other responsibilities, they will make the relationship work. Thesis Statement II: The final sentence of the story confirms that, like all the other affairs Gurov has experienced in the past, the affair with Anna will end because he will grow as bored of her as he had of others.

II.

By deploying a variety of characters in specific situations, the literary texts help us understand something about humanity, about life. What does Chekhov’s text teach us about the reasons why people fall in love? What does the text teach us about why people undergo change?
