The United States’ belief of manifest destiny led the war with Mexico in 1846. Polk’s idea to take new territory from Mexicans and disappointment over the denial to sell him California also played a vital role in his willingness to begin war against Mexico. The United States under the leadership of President Polk caused Mexico into attacking the United States troops. The war with Mexico appeared at a time when too many countries had strong feelings of manifest destiny. Manifest destiny was the belief that led the Unites States to expand from the Atlantic to Pacific oceans and from Canada to the Grand river. This idea was brought by John O Sullivan who was very popular in the 1840’s. This idea had strong impact and was one of the reasons that there was so much popular support for the United States expansion west. President Polk lasted for more land and captured Texas, California, and Oregon. Polk sent John Slidell to Mexico City to offer the Mexicans up to 25 million dollars for California but the Mexican rejected this offer. This made Polk frustrated and he began to think of new ways to obtain the territories from Mexico. Then he attempted employ against the Mexicans. The United States troops were commanded to cross over the Nueces river to the banks of the Rio Grande. This was the first move to get the Mexicans to attack the United States troops on land that was claimed by both the countries, but this did not work out as planned and the Mexicans did not attack. Polk was worried and he proposed the congress to declare the war on Mexico on May 9, 1846. In conclusion, the United States was unjust in its declaration of war in Mexico just for an unnecessary reason. Slavery in South Slavery played a dominating and critical role in the southern life. Slavery was the south’s stronghold and motive behind many political actions and economic aspects. Slavery illustrated the economic and political aspects of life in the south from 1840 to 1860. Without slaves in south, whites would to struggle in their daily life. Without slaves, there would be no cotton, tobacco, or sugar production and also, the southern economy would fail. political issues were inflamed by slavery. As America grew the south wanted more slave states and the North wanted more free states to increase their hold in politics. Since it started to be an issue for several times, Jefferson came up with the idea and asked legislature to ban the illegal slave trade in the United States. Jefferson’s bill to freed slavery system was approved but people in the south did not abolish the bill because southern people depended on slaves to raise their economy. Northern representatives strongly supported the bill and even wanted to make the punishment against slave trade in the country. There was a debate among congress from both northern and southern part of the United States. They could not make decision regarding the black people who were arrested by the custom agents. There was a growing debate within the United States concerning a slavery and its possible expansion beyond the south. Since the slaves were uneducated and could not communicate, the system needed to expand into the new Western states for the slaves’ survival. These debates led the conflict between northern and southern part of the United States which caused the Civil War and freed the slaves which was win-win for the northern America and the slaves....
