What is the theme and highlight of Rizal's The Philippines a Century Hence? 2. In what other ways can the Filipino youth of today show their patriotism to their country?

What is the theme and highlight of Rizal's The Philippines a Century Hence? Rizal’s essay, The Philippines a Century Hence, presents a thorough prophesy of how the Philippines would be through the century. This essay, published in La Solidaridad, starts by analyzing the various causes of the hardships suffered by the Filipino people. Rizal presented a clear idea of how our Motherland will end up centuries later proposing that our country will end up in either of the three ways; (1) that the Philippines will remain to be a colony of Spain but will be in good terms with its captors; (2) that the Philippines will try to cut the ties of our Motherland from its captors through violent means;(3) and lastly that we will be colonized by another country. Rizal had the urge to put freedom in our land through peaceful negotiations with the Spanish Government in Spain. With these, I agree with Rizal’s perception that the Spanish colonization have changed the cultural landscape of the Filipino people and have brainwashed them but still like Rizal, I also believe that the Filipino still remains true to their character.

In what other ways can the Filipino youth of today show their patriotism to their country? For me, the best way to show patriotism to our beloved country is to be the best we can be. What I mean is, patriotism is not something you just say. It is a strong belief and conviction put into action, big or small. It starts from within, and then we can do all things possible to help in maintaining peace, order and sustainability of life in the community. Patriotism is simply following the laws of God and observing the laws that bind people. Moreover, there may be leaks or imperfections in our government, but by simply abiding to whatever law that comes our way shows patriotism. There are a lot of people who say one thing but do otherwise. I may say that I love the Philippines and that I am very patriotic, but deep inside me, I’m really not. So, what I want to impart to each one of us is that patriotism starts within ourselves. It starts when we desire and act

to have a peaceful motherland in any way we can contribute, big or small. By voting competent and genuine public servants is also a way to express patriotism. I believe that there are still youth nowadays who are not participating in voting even though they are already qualified. Voting for me is a way to express oneself. To conclude, by merely buying the local products, ensuring the cleanliness of your neighbor, and camaraderie among your neighbors are few ways to express your patriotism.
