2 The Realist Period The realist period dated from the 1840s to the early 1900s. It was also known as the age of doubt. Europe and the United States were taken by rapid industrial growth that caused social disparities. The rich were highly differentiated amongst the low working class. Economic reform was a call to action for individuals in this time. Conflicts between social classes were inevitable. Philosopher Karl Marx developed a theory that could overthrow capitalist systems (MindEdge, 2018). Despite changes within the economy, industrial innovation’s created technological advances during this era. Photography's prototype became a new structure for visual presentation. Another great discovery was made at this time by a scientist known as Charles Darwin, and his theory of evolution and natural selection came into play (MindEdge, 2018). Individuals during the realist were focused on everyday life. The work of most authors, artists, and composers portrays that narrative. Artists such as French painter Rosa Bonheur became one of the most successful female artists of her time (MindEdge, 2018). Bonheur is known for “The Horse Fair” (1852-1855). Most of Bonheur's artwork is based on realistic animal paintings. Artist of the realism wanted objective portrayals of an observable world. Bonheur's image in "The Horse Fair" depicts several muscular horses and men that almost disappear into a shadow. Bonheur's realistic painting was a connection to individualism. Rosa Bonheur, during the realism period, became a well-known female painter at the time where most women were un-educated. She challenged social norms by dressing up as a man in order to sketch at several horse markets. "The horse fair" was inspired by one of those horse markets (MindEdge, 2018). Bonheur paved the way for other female artists.
