Red Dress

“What do women want” by Kim Addonizio” is a very interesting poem. It tells how women want to be open about their appearances and dressing without fear. It is a unique poem that stands out from other poems that I have read. The “Red Dress is a metaphor which gives and idea of women’s expression, needs and power. It is a very controversial poem that talks about how women want to conform to society and be accepted for how they want to be perceived and looked upon. To begin with, “The Red Dress” talks about how this woman wants to express herself and be accepted into society by wearing the red dress. (I want a red dress/I want it flimsy and cheap/ I want it too tight/ I want to wear it)(lines 1-4). She wants a red dress that is cheap so she could be liked by society. She wants to be accepted by society and she believes that she can be accepted if she wears the red dress. She is trying to impress a man too by wearing or trying to buy the red dress. She wants to be herself and have no fear in expressing herself. “(I want to it sleeveless and backless,/ this dress so no one has to guess/ what’s underneath)” (lines 4-6).

Next, she expresses needs and wants in the poem that gives her a sense of freedom. “I want to walk like I’m the only / woman on the earth and I can have my pick.”(lines 14-15). She wants to walk and express herself in the dress and she wants to attract attention by being herself. She wants to walk down the street with no fear and make a powerful impact. She wants to get back at a man or someone that hurt her in the past. “(I want it to conform/ your worst fears about me, / to show how little I care about you) ( Lines 17-19). She has a need or wants to get revenge to get back at someone that did her wrong. It is evident she cares about her image and wants her body to be perfect. She cares about her looks and maybe thinks the red dress will give her a sense of power. The red dress symbolizes power and the color red represents feminism which may have attacted her to the dress. Red dresses statistically attract people and draws their attention. Red represents passion and romance; also revenge. Last but not least, She wants to exemplify power. Wearing the red dress is a symbol of power when worn by woman. It attracts people’s eyes. She wants to go out in public and be comfortable showing off. “(I’ll wear it like bones,/like skin,/it’ll be the goddamned/dress they bury me in)”(lines25-27) She loves the dress so much she wants to be buried in it. She thinks the dress will solve most of her problems and give her a sense of power.

All in all, “What Do What Woman by Kim Kimdonzio” is a unique poem and talks about how woman want power. It goes into depth about woman wanting to express themselves in society without being judged and backlash. The red dress symbolizes power, romance and revenge.....
