Professor Kirk Clark Eng Composition 1 2 February 2018 Summary of “The Shawl” Part Two Cynthia Ozick is an American novelist and a short story writer. Cynthia mostly wrote stories about the holocaust and the Jews. For instance, in the story “The Shawl,” Ozick talks about the story of three girls going into a Nazi Concentration camp and trying to survive. The story opens by Ozick introducing the three main characters Stella, Rosa, and Magda. The three girls are walking and heading to a concentration camp. Magda, the baby is wrapped up under Rosa in a shawl. Stella is starving and is losing a tremendous amount of weight, while Rosa is half-conscious, and walking as if she is already dead. Ozick states “Stella was ravenous. Her knees were tumors on sticks, her elbows chicken bones” (Ozick 3). Ozick then goes on to describe Magda’s appearance. Magda has blonde hair and blue eyes, she looks nothing like Rosa nor Stella. Rosa dreams of giving Magda away but is afraid that if she moves then she might get shot. Magda is a quiet baby and when she gets hungry she starts to suck on Rosa’s dry nipple that does not have any milk left. So Magda decides to suck on the corner of the shawl. Ozick believes that the shawl is magic because it can feed a baby for up to three days and three nights. According to Ozick “It was a magic shawl, it could nourish an infant for three days and three nights” (5). Rosa is then convinced that Magda is going to die and someone will find out about her. Meanwhile, Magda is very protective over her shawl and no one can touch it other than Rosa. Stella goes on to steal the shawl from Magda claiming that she is cold. Magda then begins to look for her shawl and ends up around the roll-call arena. Magda is screaming out the word

“Ma,” and Rosa is unclear of what she should do. Rosa does not know if she should run and get Magda or if she should run and get the shawl. Rosa takes the shawl away from Stella and runs back outside only to find Magda being held by a guard and walking towards a fence. The next minute Magda is tossed across an electric fence. Rosa wants to run towards Magda but if she does then the guards will shoot. So to cope with the pain Rosa takes the shawl and put it in her mouth to stop the crying and to drink Magda’s saliva until it dries. I am in disbelief that Stella would do something so evil to her sister Magda. Rosa tried her hardest to save Magda. Stella did not do anything to help keep her little sister protected. I believe that Magda would have still been alive if Rosa looked out for her and wasn’t so selfish....
