The shocking difference between American and European chocolate!

It melts in your mouth and has that sweet, creamy, and slightly bitter- cacao taste to it. Do you know what we’re talking about? We think you do. Chocolate! You could name a few already! Kit Kat, Reese's cups, Milky Way, Butterfingers, and Hershey's kisses! The list can go on and on!

The majority of people can admit to enjoying chocolate a bit too much, to the point where it’s becoming comically unhealthy. Chocolate is agreed to be one of the best snacks out there throughout the globe. But what if we told you not everyone enjoys the same chocolate that you thought of? What if we also told you that chocolate outside America is healthier?

Throughout the internet, a lot of European people have spoken up about their strong opinions. The majority of Europeans strongly dislike American chocolate! But why is that? What could be the reason for them to loathe such a succulent treat? Well, we dug deeper into the research behind why they would dislike it and we made a shocking discovery!

According to the article Why British And American Chocolate Taste Different from Insider. European chocolate is richer in the famous ingredient that creates the magic, cacao! In fact! For the chocolate to be even considered “milk chocolate” in England, it can't contain less than 25% cacao in the product. Meanwhile, American chocolate is high with sugar at the top of its list, making it “too sweet” according to a commentary from an anonymous person referred to in the article. When it comes to the percentage of the required cacao in American chocolate ”The US stipulates that milk chocolate must contain no less than 10% chocolate liquor.“

It’s also mentioned in an article by daily mail how Americans use milk that has gone through a process called controlled lipolysis, frequently used in Hershey's kisses chocolate! The fatty acids in the milk go into a decomposition state which in turn creates a taste similar to vomit!

The problem though with American chocolate is not only the taste but also the health benefits.

Since they have compared mostly American chocolate to chocolate from England we decided to search for ourselves and compare Hershey kisses to Marabou milk chocolate. A brand that is very popular in the Scandinavian countries.

We were shocked to find out that a whole bar of Marabous milk chocolate contains 58 grams of sugar and 550 kcal. While we thought that that was a lot, we were not prepared for the information we got when we went to Hershey's website. Only two blocks of Hershey's chocolate contain 14 grams of sugar and 120 calories! Imagine the numbers of the whole bar! This made us concerned about the health benefits. We stumbled across an article from Healthline Experts Agree: Sugar Might Be as Addictive as Cocaine that was also medically reviewed by the registered dietitian nutritionist, Miho Hatanaka, who graduated from Syracuse University with a Bachelor of Science in nutrition.

We found out that there is more to it than just the simple fact that sugar is bad for your teeth. Sugar for sure is sweet, but the facts behind it are not.

When eating anything that contains sugar which is heavily linked with dopamine, you tend to repeat that behavior since it's rewarding. But when you intake the same amount of sugar to get that kick repeatedly, your brain will get used to that dose, which will result in more intake since that’s the only way for you to feel that kick again.

So you end up in a cycle which grows bigger and bigger which will lead to weight gain over time. Shockingly, one of the most beloved snacks can cause such damage but at least there's a better alternative for Hershey's. Who knows?

Maybe you should switch to European chocolate instead?

I did not want to use this source at first since I was too skeptical about its reliability. There are too many advertisements, making the site look less professional. But looking into other trustworthy websites, they as well have advertisements. Inside is also not a page like Quora where people write their opinions. It’s a famous News website. It being famous makes me feel more confident about its sources. Hershey’s (n.d.). Nutrition Information. https://www.hersheyland.com/products/hersheys-milk-chocolate-giant-candy-bar-7-oz.html It’s just nutrition facts I needed for this article for comparison and to strengthen my argument. It’s from the original creators of Hershey’s therefore very reliable.

Schaefer,A., Yasin, K. (2020, April 29). Experts Agree: Sugar might be as addictive as Cocaine. Healthline. https://www.healthline.com/health/food-nutrition/experts-is-sugar-addictive-drug This source is the most trustworthy source I’ve used. Not only is Healthline already a reliable website and well known. But this article is medically reviewed by Miho Hatanaka. When looking more into her I found out she’s a dietitian nutritionist who’s had a bachelor's degree. Knowing that a professional has overlooked an article feels safer. Also in the article, they leave out the source when referring to other articles. Mat.se (n.d.). But the problem is that Marabou doesn't have the nutrition list on any of their chocolate bars, so I had to look into another food website that would give out the information....
