The Stepladder Technique This technique is designed to prevent social loafing and minimize the tendency for group members to be unwilling to present their ideas by structuring the entry of group members into a core group. Initially, a small core group of two members work together on a problem. Then, a third member joins the group and presents his/her preliminary suggestions for solving the problem. Next, the member’s presentation is followed by a three-member discussion. Each additional member-fourth, fifth, and so on-joins the expanding core group and presents his/her preliminary solutions.
Four requirements of the stepladder technique: ● Each member is given time to think about the problem before joining the core group ● New members must make a preliminary solution presentation before hearing the core group’s ideas ● Sufficient time is allocated to discuss the problem as each member is added ● The final decision only occurs after the entire group has been formed
Advantages ● Each member is not influenced by the group in generating preliminary solutions to the problem
● Each group member must offer solutions ● Group is required to consider a constant infusion of new ideas...
