Description

Name: Giovanni Catanzaro DATE: April 9, 2016 ENGL 1302, 31410 Short Story: “The Story of an Hour” Author: Kate Chopin 1. Most important paragraph and why (one direct quote from the work is required. Write a correct MLA parenthetical citation for the chosen quote) ~Formal Attribution Required. In your answer, do not copy the entire paragraph. You need only to quote key words or phrases from the paragraph. Be sure you correctly integrate the key words or phrases, surrounded by quotation marks, in complete sentences: The most important paragraph in Kate Chopin’s short story, “The Story of an Hour” tells the reader about Brently Mallard coming into the picture: “It was Brently Mallard who entered, a little travel-stained, composedly carrying his grip-sack and umbrella” (3). The paragraph surprises the reader with the returning of the once thought to be dead husband. 2. Most important sentence and why (Write a correct MLA parenthetical citation for the chosen sentence) ~ Partial or Simple Attribution Required. Be sure you correctly integrate the complete sentence: The most important sentence in the short story is when Mrs. Mallard says, “Body and soul free” (Chopin 2), because it illustrates to the reader that she is free. She is able to go about as she pleases. She is no longer tied down to her husband’s command and authority She is now happy. 3. Most important word and why (Write a correct MLA parenthetical citation for the chosen word) ~ Simple Attribution if Required. Be sure you correctly integrate the single word, no phrases, in a complete sentence: Chopin’s use of the word “free” (2) shows how excited and happy Mrs. Mallard is in the story. She shouts this word over and over again to show that she is now an independent woman.

4. What surprised you the most? What surprised me the most was when Brently Mallard came back at the end of the short story. It definitely surprised me to see his appearance. Knowing that Mrs. Mallard was very happy to hear about his death, it coincidentally winds up being the poison that kills her. 5. What makes the character(s) believable (dress, accent, actions, etc.)? What makes the characters believable is the dialogue. The way Mrs. Mallard expresses her freedom throughout the end of the short story is very well used to show the reader how happy she is. Without it, we wouldn’t know how happy she was. 6. What are some of the aspects of the story that you found humorous, disturbing, confusing, romantic, erotic, mysterious, etc.….? What I found disturbing is what actually killed Mrs. Mallard. Are we, as readers, supposed to feel joyful that Mrs. Mallard died of happiness or that she died? The reader could be confused as well. 7. As the story progressed, what 4 things did you discover? These could be taken from the plot (actual events & actions), the character(s), the setting, the vocabulary, the style of the writing, your reaction to the story, etc. 1. I learned that a trait of feminine gothic literature was used. The author uses the last name of the husband on Mrs. Mallard instead if using her first name. 2. I learned that as long as you die happy, you had a good run in life. 3. I learned that Josephine was only looking for the best in Mrs. Mallard and not trying to ruin her happiness. 4. I learned that you shouldn’t celebrate too early until you truly get the answer you were looking for. 8. Write a correct MLA Work Cited citation:
