The Kite Runner – Chapter Summaries Chapter 11 .It’s the 1980’s and Amir and Baba are now living in the USA, Baba likes the strength of the USA but the pollution and lack of fresh food makes him sick. Baba refuses to learn English or adapt but he still commands the respect amongst ex-pat Afghans. .Amir graduates from high school and decides to study English, his father wants him to study something that’ll lead to a ‘proper’ job yet Amir stands his ground. .Baba and Amir buy items from garage sales and sell them from a stall in the Afghan section of the San Jose flea market, here Amir falls in love with a girl named Soraya. Chapter 12 .Amir’s attention is welcomed by her mother as he spends more time with her at the market yet her father warns him off. .Baba falls ill with lung cancer and refuses to accept any treatment and forbids Amir to tell anyone, after Baba collapses at the market he’s taken to hospital and he asks Baba to approach Soraya’s family for her hand in marriage and all is agreed. Soraya reveals to Amir she ran away from home when she was younger and lived with a man, Amir wishes he could tell her his secret. Chapter 13 .Amir is engaged to Soraya yet this period is cut short so Baba can be there. Soraya movedin with Amir to help him look after Baba, one day he discovers she has been sharing his stories with Baba. .A month after Baba die and the funeral reminds Amir of his father’s strength and how much he relied on him. He learns Soraya’s father suffers from migraines but hopes to return to Afghanistan. .Amir gets into college and his first novel is published, him and Soraya try to have kids but can’t. Chapter 14 – Story returns to 2001 and Amir receives phone call from Rahim Khan who is sick asking Amir to go to Pakistan, his message ‘There is a way to be good again’ tells Amir that the older man knows about the rape. .Amir and Soraya are childless, they don’t talk about it yet it’s a problem in their marriage. She arranges for her parents to stay with her while Amir is away then he flies to Pakistan. Chapter 15 .Amir arrives in Pakistan to meet a very ill Rahim Khan the first time since he left Kabul .Rahim recounts the terrible changes in Afghanistan under the Taliban regime and goes onto say there is a final wish he wants Amir to perform and tells Amir. Chapter 16 .Rahim Khan relates the story of what has happened to him since Amir last saw him, unable to maintain the house he searched out Ali and Hassan to help him and finds Hassan yet Ali was killed by a landmine. Rahim asks Hassan and his family to live with him and the eventually agree. .Fazana gives birth to a stillborn baby but gets pregnant, Hassan’s mother Sanaubar returns and Hassan and his wife nurse her back to health and she then delivers their son Sohrab. Hassan tries to give his son a normal life but this becomes difficult after the Taliban invasion in 1996....
