The Kite Runner – Chapter Summaries Chapter 1 .Amir tells us about a phone call from Rahim Khaim he received 6 months earlier, asking him to come to Pakistan. After the call he took a walk in Golden Gate Park in San Fran, where he now lives and watched kites fly. .He remembered his childhood friend Hassan, a kite runner with a cleft lip, and he remembered an event from his childhood in Afghanistan in which he watched something in an alley and thought how that’s moulded him as a person. Chapter 2 .Amir recalls that Hassan, a family servant, was a Hazara which was a lower ethnic group. .He remembers how he and Hassan use to get into trouble with Baba yet Hassan always took the blame and that Hassan’s father suffers from polio. .We learn that Amir’s mother died giving birth to him and that Hassan’s mother left her husband 5 days after giving birth to him. .Amir discovers that for a long time the Hazaras have been persecuted by his own people the Pashtuns. Chapter 3 .Amir reflects how Baba was always disappointed with him because of his lack of many attributes but despite this he still wanted to prove his worth to the father he loved. His father was seen as a great man by many people who had the ability to achieve more than what was expected of him e.g. him building and orphanage. .Amir remembers how he became interested in reading and writing as a way to escape his father’s disapproval and when he tries to share it Baba is scornful and Amir comes to believe his father hates him because he holds him responsible for his mother’s death at childbirth. He overhears Baba saying how much more manly Hassan is and he can’t believe Amir is his son to Rahim Khan. Chapter 4 .We learn that Ali was an orphan brought up by Baba’s father and that they grew up together. .Hassan acted as Amir’s servant yet they spent a lot of time together with Amir reading stories to the illiterate Hassan, after Hassan praises a story Amir has written he began writing more. However Baba doesn’t wish to read Amir’s stories but Rahim Khan does and praises him for it. Chapter 5 .Conversation between Hassan and Amir interrupted by gunfire, the sounds of the coup that overthrow the king. Amir and Hassan go to their tree to distract themselves from events yet on the way they meet three bullies (Assef) who questions Amir about having a Hazara friend yet Hassan scares them off with his slingshot and Assef promises revenge. .Baba arranges for Hassan’s cleft lip to be corrected as a birthday present and Amir informs us that this was the winter Hassan stopped smiling....
