Description

To kill a mockingbird Chapter 26 1. In her lesson no Hitler, Miss Gates says, “we [American people] don’t believe in persecuting anyone.” Why does this feel like a strange thing to say given everything that’s happened in the book? This seems strange to the reader and Scout herself given that in past chapters we have been to see the racism in Maycomb. This is non other than persecution of a determined group of people, which Miss Gates says it´s not okay to do while she does it in her own community with black people. This is extremely hypocrite and ironic, making it give that feeling of weirdness. 2. Why is Scout confused by the fact that Miss Gates doesn’t like Hitler? She is confused because she heard Miss Gates at the courtroom preach about the same ideals of Hitler of prosecuting a race or group, (The only difference is that Hitler does it with Jews and her with black people) whilst she hates him, for this exact. How can Miss Gates hate Hitler for hating Jews while she hates black people? 3. If you were going to give this chapter a title, what would it be and why? Hypocrisy for Miss Gate´s actions. 4. What is the most important sentence in the chapter? Write it down and explain why you chose it. For example, you might explain what it reveals about a character or how it relates to a theme in the novel. “You’re getting so big now, I’ll just have to hold a part of you.” – Atticus Even if this quote from Atticus refers to her physical growth, it functions as a direct reference to the change Scout is starting to receive during these last chapters. Her starting to leave back her Tomboy phase and to see the irony that lives within her community being examples of this. And this is important because one of the clear topics surrounding this book is the one on maturing. About how children had to been forced to grow by their society, making them mockingbird killed by the cruelties of the real world. So, this sentence from the chapter is revealing us that this part is starting to happen, and we are entering the climax/conclusion of the book and we are going to soon receive the message the author intended to tell us across her words....
