To the Young Women of Malolos This letter written by Jose Rizal addresses all kinds of women and consist of his perspective about different subject matter relating to them. Jose Rizal emphasized his admiration to the bravery of the young women of Malolos. But despite of the fearlessness they have shown, these women still experienced injustices and oppression. We cannot deny the fact that gender inequality has always been present, in terms of economic participation, job opportunities, education, political empowerment, and so on. During the early times, young girls are being denied an education because of the concept that they would soon become wives and that they should just stay home, take care of their children, and do household chores. With that, Rizal expressed his desire for women to have the same opportunities as those received by men. He said that men and women should both have freedom and right to education. He also emphasized the importance of education for Filipinas as it can free them from oppression and slavery. He also wrote very powerful passages about standing firm and fighting for what they believe in and that they should not conform and blindly follow evil authorities. Rizal also wrote about the responsibilities of Filipino mothers to their children. He said that mothers should be careful on what they show or teach to her children, as children imitate and adapt what they observe around them. So, if these mothers teach nothing else but how to kneel

in submission, then her children will obviously be oppressed slaves who do nothing but do as they are told, just like how the friars took advantage of their ignorance of freedom. This portion of Rizal’s writing is truly of great importance as it enlightens women during his time that in order to be truly free, they should fight, demand freedom, and not tolerate the oppressors. In this writing, Rizal also gave advice to unmarried men and women that physical appearances should not be their basis in choosing who they want to end up with. Additionally, he stated that young women should look for a man who has a noble and honored name, a manly heart, and someone who stand against slavery. Although, there are much more number of women now that are educated, and have the power to fight for what they believe in, oppression and gender inequality are still not eradicated completely. To the Young Women of Malolos truly remains relevant up to the present time, and Filipinas’ fight in this is far from over....
