Mathematics Examination Feedback Form
This form is intended to provide generic feedback to students on examination performance in individual units, in line with university code of practice for the assessment of taught programmes. Its purpose is to help students to develop their skills, knowledge and understanding and help them evaluate their current level of performance.
Unit Title:
Topics in Discrete Mathematics
Unit Code:
MATH-30002, MATH-M0009
Examination Markers:
Kevin Grace, Stephen Piddock
Common areas that were well done: Many students did very well on question 1. In particular, most students did well on parts a-d.
Question 2 was also answered well overall. The correct methods were usually used for 2a) and most students only lost marks here by making small calculation errors. The later “bookwork” questions were done very well.
Common errors, misunderstandings or other areas requiring improvement: Although many students had correct solutions for question 1, part e, several students failed to realise that this was a question about matroids in general, rather than graphic matroids. For example, a bond is a minimal edge cut of a graph. Therefore, graphs have bonds, but it does not make sense to talk about a bond of a generic matroid.
On question 2b most students successfully showed that v is harmonic, but a common mistake was then to forget to check that the flow arising from these voltages is a unit flow. Some students did not provide any answer to part(iii)....
