Tough Mother A bright smile that shines from her face, eager and ready for her interview with her son. Jessica L. Paris was born in Jackson Mississippi. One brother and two sisters, Paris was the youngest amongst her siblings. Because Paris is the youngest of her siblings she spent some years home alone, as if she was the only child. Growing up Paris was top of her classes during grade school. “ Your grandmother did not play when it came to grades,” Paris mentioned while showing that bright smile again. “That’s why I’m so hard on you when it comes to school,” Paris stated. Although my mom was an honored student in school, during her senior year of high school she soon had bigger responsibilities. December 27, 2001, was the day my face appeared on earth. During our interview, I asked my mom what was it like to have me at such a young age. “ It was scary at first, but with the great support I had, I was able to make ends meet. Having you was a challenge, but overall a blessing,” Paris stated. It was quite heartwarming hearing that from my mother, we then hugged and proceeded with the interview.

Although my mother had me at a young age she was still motivated to have a successful future. Coming from high school my mom wasn’t able to attend college on campus, thus she missed out on the college experience. Paris wasn’t too worried about college life though, she was determined to make sure her future and mine were pretty bright. “ The college life wasn’t really that big of a deal to me, I just wanted to go to school so we could live how we live right now.”

During this period of her life, she had to work two jobs while attending an online school for college. “ I would say times were tough during this point of my life, trying to maintain two jobs for bills while doing online school.” As I was sitting next to my mom during the interview, I started remembering the times I would sit in the kitchen of an Apple Bees restaurant while she would work. I proceed to ask her about the times I would wait in the kitchen while she worked. “ Yeah, that didn’t work for long, “ she said while laughing. “You started playing with all the toys that came with the kid’s meal and even opened the ones that were sealed.” While sitting on the couch we both started laughing obnoxiously for no apparent reason. I thought that was pretty funny considering she also mentioned I was a pretty bad kid while I was little. Eventually, my mother and grandmother came to an agreement that my grandma would take care of me back in Mississippi while my mom moves to Texas for better job opportunities. “ I knew since a kid I wasnt going to live in Mississippi for long because I wanted to venture out and see what was out there.” Once moved to texas, Paris finished all four years of college and received her first fulltime job. “This was one of many accomplishments that I was very proud of,” Paris was now able to have decent living style.

After some months passed Paris was living pretty good. She was working a good job that paid her well and started getting used to texas living style. “ One thing that took some time getting used to was the weather here. One day it could be extremely hot and the next day it can be extremely cold,” Paris mentioned. Although things seemed as if they were getting better my mother got her car totaled. Thank God she wasnt badly injured, but she was out of a car and had no transportation. Paris would walk back and forth to the grocery store when needed to and take a taxi to work. Somedays she would be late and this would almost cost her a job, but she was still

determined to work harder to get a new car. “Every day was a challenge, I would wake up some morning and have no energy to get out of bed, but I stayed dedicated through it all.”

Paris finally was able to buy a car, although it wasnt much it was able to get her from point A to point B. “ A navy blue honda civic was the first car I bought on my own. The other car was a gift from your grandmother.” After living in Austin Texas for a few years my mom started working at Fidelity and decided to move to Dallas and continue school. During this time I would occasionally visit my mom during summer and winter breaks. Whenever I would get to see my mom during these breaks from school, she would take me to arcades or amusement parks. I looked at my mom as a hero during this time, because she made everything better. As timed passed my mom decided to have me live with her, considering that Mississpii schools weren’t going to get me far.

While being able to stay with my mom was fun, things would get serious during school. She would push me to work harder for sports and even harder for school. She taught me important things about life, and without having a farter around, she would soon teach me things to become a man/gentlemen. After living with my mom, I started seeing all the hard work she put in to start her own business. Paris now owns her own business (Saga Media) and travels the world. Paris has goals to take her business to the next level while seeing the world. “At the beginning, there was doubts of even making it this far, but if there’s one thing I learned, it is that when times get tough continue to push forward and you will accomplish your goals.”
