TOYS TOYS Toys serve a significant role in the growth and development of a child. According to psychologists, children have various developmental stages. These stages describe the mental and physical development of a child. In the early stages of a tender kid, it is apparent that most parents and caregivers give them dolls. This shows that dolls play a particular role in the development of a child. This paper seeks to address some concerns about dolls; what dolls are for what gender, what roles do this dolls play in the life of the child and why the dolls have developed or changed over time. To begin with, there are dolls particularly meant for a girl child while others are exclusively manufactured to suit the boys. From the general view of the dolls in this survey, I was able to identify the dolls for girls which are predominantly pink in color, with an emphasis of beauty. This has been evident in most of the dolls made for girls. On the other hand, dolls meant for boys are seen to possess some features such as images of superheroes and trucks. The two distinct characteristics of the dolls in this case are a show of binary gender. On the one hand, there is the masculine dolls. A good example is the gun and soldiers with “action man” popularly related to boys. The appearance of the “action man” signified a soldier which is a symbol of aggression among boys. For the girls, Barbie dolls and related accessories as well as ballerina costumes are common. The “female-friendly Lego range” was a doll developed resembling a scientist who was female. The unisex dolls or toys include playing balls and toy animals. The latter group can be used by any gender. The toys portray some gender roles for either gender. This is because, it has traditionally been noted that the girls’ dolls develop some sense of “nurturing” among girls. Most of the girls

TOYS will hold the dolls like babies and would not want them “hurt”. For the boys, they are associated with aggression. This trait develops over time. As they grow up, boys are seen to possess some aggressiveness that can be attributed to the kind of dolls they are given at a young age. From the foregoing, it is apparent that dolls play a vital role in the growth and development of a child. The gender concerns are not new. They have been there since when we were young. The same can be traced to date. The only difference is that there are new advancements and moderations in the dolls. Otherwise, the tradition still continues. What belongs to the boys still belongs to the boys – similarly to the female gender. Even at an old age, the same traits are evident. Girls like pink stuff while boys will be seen with apparels resembling those of the policemen. Conclusively, the traits demonstrated by young kids on the dolls they prefer are similar to what the older generation still show. Things have not changed, but time has.
