Trance Texts are important ways of conveying the values and attitudes about individuals and culture. Poems are a significant way of conveying an individual’s values and attitudes which links to an individual’s perception. An individual’s perception is often influenced by culture creating a sense of connection and shaping one’s identity. Through Cobby Eckermann’s anthology collection Inside my mother, the poem Trance portrays the persona’s values and attitudes through the theme ‘reconnection to family and culture’. Cobby Eckermann achieves this by using several language techniques that are used to emphasize the persona’s deep connection with her husband who has passed away. The readers gain an understanding through the persona’s trance of the good memories she shares with her husband which is seen through nature as nature plays an important role in indigenous culture. In the poem Trance by Cobby Eckermann, the theme reconnection to family and culture is deeply portrayed through the persona’s reconnection to her husband and culture. Through nature she can feel a connection to her values and attitudes as nature plays a big part of indigenous spiritual beliefs. It is through the personification and symbolism that Cobby Eckermann has used in the fifth stanza, “heat is the love of the campfire, the yellow kiss of the sun, the passion that flows after hunting, and life before her man died”, that clearly portrays nature as a vital part Aboriginal culture which symbolises the deep connection. Also, the choice of words used to describe the assets of nature such as love, yellow kiss, passion and life emphasizes the scaredness of nature to the Aboriginal people and culture influencing the deep connection of the persona. Therefore, an individual’s values and attitudes are influenced by one’s culture allowing a deep sense of connection and the shaping of one’s sense of identity....
