TRANSIENT ISCHEMIC ATTACK (TIA) What is it & What Causes it AKA Mini Stroke Compare to: Angina Caused by blood flow to the brain being obstructed due to atherosclerosis or a small blood cl0t, the patient may exhibit signs of a stroke When stroke like symptoms resolve on their own in less than 24 hours No infarction occurs with TIA Considered an emergency, can be a warning signs that more significant stroke may occur in the future About ⅓ of TIA will experience a full stroke after, and should be thoroughly examined by a physician
Signs & Symptoms Facial drooping Sudden weakness or numbness in face, arm, leg or one side of the body Decreased or absent movement & sensation in one side of the body Lack of muscles coordination (ataxia) or loss of balance Sudden vision loss in one eye Blurred or double vision Difficulty swallowing Decreased level of responsiveness Speech disorders Aphasia Slurred speech Sudden & severe headache, Confusion, dizziness, weakness, combativeness, restlessness Tongue deviation Coma
Treatments Treat the same as a stroke S&S make it almost indistinguishable from a stroke
Notes FAST mnemonic can be used to assess signs for stoke F: Facial droop: ask patient to smile, look for droop on either side of patient's face A: Arm drift: ask patient to close their eyes and hold arms out with palms up, then watch for one to drift down S: Speech: ask for patient to repeat a simple phrase, then listen for slurred speech) T: Time: note the time the patient was last seen acting normally ...
