Transition from the Classical Era to Romantic Era
The transition from the Classical to Romantic era took place in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Classical music periods represent the eras in which they were produced. During these days, culture, economics, society, and politics collectively affected and, to some degree, dominated the production of music. The Romantic period was most prominent in the visual arts, music, and literature, but it also had an impact on history, learning, humanities, and natural sciences. It had a significant and diverse influence on politics, influencing liberalism, radicalism, imperialism, and nationalism. Religion was a hotly debated subject throughout the Romantic phase, with many opposing viewpoints fighting for dominance and legitimacy. Instrumental groupings are what bridged the classical and romantic periods. “Many ensembles that were created during the classical period carried through and developed during the romantic period. The orchestra, for example, was firmly established in the classical period and continued to enjoy favour in the romantic period and onwards.”(Dr Justin Wildridge “Classical vs Romantic music”). Throughout all eras of music, the piano remained one of the most common instruments,
both as a solo instrument and in the orchestral context of the concerto. The romantic era brought older musical styles to their absolute limit, and that in some cases rendered them unrecognizable. In the romantic era, composers concentrated on the need to truly articulate the richest sentiments, even to the detriment of the composition, which could be extended well beyond the normal possibilities of the musical material. If we compare the classical and romantic periods on a scale, the romantic era comes out on top. In comparison to the measured, succinct classical works, the concertos and symphonies were
almost displays of luxury and indulgence. Both time periods produced works of exceptional quality in their own right. In that way, the classical and romantic periods are inextricably linked.
