What: Scholarly monography (secondary source) About when the Chinese immigrated in search of jobs to the United States, and the hardships they encountered when they arrived. When: The book was written in 2008, but the chapter content dates to the 1840s and 1850s. Where: This all took place in the United States, but in the state of California and New York to be more specific, which is where most of the Chinese settled. Why Important: The chapter is significant as it addresses the difficulties and challenges endured by the Chinese as they immigrated to the United States. It also addresses how the Chinese people were influenced by naturalization laws and the prejudice they faced Reading Notes: ● The whites were moving westbound ● There was a cost to Chinese vagabonds, like the Taiping Rebellion ● Serving in mines in California became commonplace ● The Chinese moved to San Francisco ● In the mechanical age, San Francisco had more than twelve thousand employees ● California's introduction sparked American migration towards Aisa, as well as Asians' push to America ● The company charged thirty-one dollars a month to the Chinese professionals; if the managers had used white professionals, they would have had to pay higher wages in addition to the board and the hotel, which would have raised labor costs by 33 percent

Takaki, Ronald, Ch. 10, “PACIFIC CROSSINGS From Japan to the Land of “Money Trees” “ Who: The author is Ronald Takaki, and the chapter is from his book A Different Mirror: A Multicultural America History; through his writing, Takaki became best known for discussing Asian American stereotypes and was a professor at UC Berkeley. What: Secondary source They talk about the Japanese and other Asian societies throughout the book, and their relocation to Hawaii. Takaki addresses the many reasons the Japanese went to the Americas. Management of the administration has retained a diverse variety of employees who are different nationalities. They also speak in this section about the awful working conditions under which they worked until the first light and the quarters in which they lived. When: The time that happened was during the 1890s when the Americans saw their appearance. This was during the nineteenth century Where: This was in the Americans and the extension arrived at all the paths over the Pacific Ocean Why: This is significant in view of the fact that we are being informed on the difficulties that Japanese and Asian communities have endured since relocating to Hawaii and, moreover, to the Americans.
