Week 2 Tutorial
Topic: Applying design theories in practice Outcomes Develop a better understanding of affordance and visibility Apply them in practice Preparation/reading Getner and Nielson (1996) "The Anti -- Mac Interface", Communications of the ACM, vol 39, No 8
Activity 1. Discussion of the Getner and Nielson paper In half a page and dot points format, summarize the key ideas or points of the paper. The summary should also include your reflections and comments on the paper as well. Activity 2. Affordance
In your own words, describe what is affordance (do not repeat the lecture note).
Observe the furniture, objects and appliances in your house, and objects around your house and community. Identify objects which have good affordance and objects with poor affordance, explain why. (do not repeat examples in lectures)
You may use a picture for each example you’ve identified to help your explanation.
ANS> Affordance is a way to design stuff that makes the use of that particular things easier to understand and make sense without even looking at the instruction. Some of the stuff with good affordance here at my place are: Coffee Cup because all of us know that where to hold by just looking with it, Bicycle because we know where to sit on it and how it works. Some of the stuff with bad affordance are : door knobs- some of the door at my house are really confusing because when you put the key it keeps on rotating around. Another one is Glass Slab door to the balcony, it’s really hard to even know how it’s opened and where to open form.
Activity 3. Visibility
In your own words, describe what is visibility in interface design.
Browse a few websites which you visit every day or any software you use every day and identify designs or objects which have good visibility and objects with poor visibility, explain why.

ANS> Visibility is way to state that something is visible without getting confused or without an accident. It’s could also be caused by bad affordance. Some of the object that have good visibility are as: All the train Station Signs, it has quite good visibility because even when we are on a train we know where we are just looking outside a station. Some of the object with bad visibility are as: Coles receipt, it’s very confusing to find stuff on there and sometime it takes ages to be able to find some particular stuff on a receipt with multiple items....
