Attendance Tutorials are an important component of MGMT2016 teaching and learning program. Satisfactory attendance (e.g. 75%) to tutorials is expected in this unit. In the face-to-face tutorial, a class roll will be taken weekly. It is student’s responsibility to sign the attendance sheet provided each time. If you are unable to attend a tutorial due to unavoidable circumstances, it is strongly advisable that you provide a satisfactory supporting document (e.g. medical certificate from your doctor or a letter from your employer stating your unavoidable job assignment, etc.) so your absence is recorded accordingly. In the online tutorials via Zoom, your attendance will be automatically recorded once you log in. Please make sure that you use your Macquarie University email address and your official name to log in so your attendance can be recorded and recognised.

Preparation Students are expected to be prepared to participate in tutorial activities each week starting Week 2. Students will be required to undertake some preparation prior to attending tutorials, such as readings or learning calculation techniques for working out demographic measurements. Please bring a calculator with scientific functions to all tutorials.

Assessments As part of your course assessment you will be required to undertake two individual in-semester assessments (e.g. two 1500-word reports). Please note that individual work must be done independently. A two-hour final exam will be held during the university final examination period (format to be advised later). In addition, 5% is allocated to class participation to ensure an effective learning experience and outcome.

Assessment Submission The due dates/times and other details for the two reports will be provided in Week 2 and Week 7. A softcopy of the report is to be submitted to Turnitin.

Tutorial Activities In each tutorial, some specific tasks/activities will be undertaken. In this first tutorial, students will be provided with an overview of the unit and also get to know each other in the class. Today’s activities will involve students to do a brief introduction for getting to know each other and carry out the estimation of “Basic Demographic Measures”.

MGMT2016 - Business Demographics Tutorial 1 – Basic Demographic Measures and Concepts (Week 2: S1 2021) Note: Please refer to the relevant parts of the prescribed text book (Chapter 3) and recommended reference book (Chapters 4 and 5) which provide background knowledge to the subject matter to be explored in this Tutorial.

Part A: Population Pyramid Using the following data draw population pyramids of China in 1990 and in 2015, observe and compare the differences of the two pyramids. Discuss with your peers next to you as a small group. Then share your group observations with the whole class. You could draw the pyramids by hand or using Excel. Instruction was given in Week 1 lecture notes. Percentage Distribution of the Population of China by Age and Sex: 1990 and 2015

Age Group 0-4 5-9 10-14 15-19 20-24 25-29 30-34 35-39 40-44 45-49 50-54 55-59 60-64 65-69 70+ Total

China 1990 China 2015 Males Females Males Females 5.85 5.55 3.18 2.73 4.66 4.34 3.08 2.61 4.35 4.08 2.97 2.51 5.41 5.07 3.40 2.93 5.70 5.34 3.94 3.55 4.67 4.40 4.74 4.56 3.81 3.49 3.76 3.57 3.87 3.62 3.48 3.34 2.90 2.63 4.31 4.14 2.25 2.02 4.51 4.34 2.09 1.87 3.64 3.54 1.90 1.72 2.86 2.74 1.32 1.30 2.33 2.32 1.32 1.30 2.33 2.32 1.37 1.81 2.90 3.33 51.46 48.54 51.44 48.56

Part B: Population Growth Using the Population Census data, the estimated total population of Australia ( in thousands) in 2006 and 2016 are as follow: - 30/06/2006 : 19,855,400 - 30/06/2016 : 24,127,200

1.

Calculate the average annual growth rate of the total Australian population between 2006 and 2016 (Note: use the exponential growth rate and show your answer to 3 decimal places, dcp.) Po = P2006 =

Pt=P2016 =

2.

Double Time. How long (in years, answer to 2 dcp; decimal points) and when (calendar year and nearest month) will it be for the total Australian population to be double its size in June 2016, assuming that the population grows continuously at a rate of 1.4% per annum. Pt = 2 x P2016 (Double population size than pop. in 2016)

Part C: Basic Demographic Measures Calculate Crude Birth Rate, Crude Death Rate, Crude Net Migration Rate, Natural Increase Rate using data given for Australia. a. Number of births (1/Jan/2015 to 31/Dec/2015) = 305,400 b. Number of deaths (1/Jan/2015 to 31/Dec/2015) = 156,400 c. Net migration (1/Jan/2015 to 31/Dec/2015) = +177,100 d. Total population (30 June 2015) = 23,781,200 Assuming births, deaths and migrants are evenly distributed throughout the year in 2015, Estimate: 1. Crude Birth Rate (CBR) in 2015 2. Crude Death Rate (CDR) in 2015 3. Crude Net Migration Rate (CNMR) in 2015 4. Natural increase in 2015 5. Natural increase rate in 2015 6. Total population on 31 December 2015...
