Description

TUTORIAL 2 ROTATIONAL MOTION 1. A flywheel originally at rest is to reach an angular velocity of 36 rad/s in 6.0 s. a) What constant angular acceleration must it have? b) What total angle does it turn through in the 6.0 s? 2. A car accelerates uniformly from rest to a speed of 15 m/s in a time of 20 s. Find the angular acceleration of one of its wheels and the number of revolutions turned by a wheel in the process. The radius of the car wheel is m. 3. A grindstone has a moment of inertia of 1.6 x 10-3 kg m2. When a constant torque is applied, the flywheel reaches an angular velocity of 1200 rev/min in 15 s. Assuming it started from rest, find : a) The angular acceleration b) The unbalanced torque applied c) The angle turned through in the 15 s d) The work W done on the flywheel by the torque. 4. Determine moment of inertia of a 12 kg uniform rod, 0.30 m long, rotating about an axis perpendicular to the rod and passing through the centre of the rod. 5. Determine the moment of inertia of a 10.8 kg sphere of radius 0.648 m when the axis of rotation is through its center. 6. Calculate the translational speed of a cylinder when it reaches the foot of an incline 7.20 m high. Assume it starts from rest and rolls without slipping. 7. A bowling ball of mass 7.3 kg and radius 9.0 cm rolls without slipping down a lane at 3.7 m/s. Calculate its total kinetic energy. 8. Two blocks, each of mass 3 kg, are attached to the ends of a massless rod which pivots as shown in Fig. 1. Initially the rod is held in the horizontal position and then released. Calculate the magnitude and direction of the net torque on this system. (L1 = 4 cm, L2= 8 cm)
