Description

LAW & SOCIETY (WEEK 7) Please refer to lecture on Law and Justice in Week 4. 1. Do you agree that everyone should have equal opportunity to run for office? If so, do you think you would be able to run for office of the Prime Minister one day? -

Not everyone shall have opportunity to run the office, and this question looks alike the question on do you agree that everyone has equal chance to succeed

-

In rural area, my school for example, there were 220 of us in a batch during PT3. After PT3, there were only 180 left, 40 out of 220 dropped out from secondary school. And the rate is even higher in some areas.

-

My example is not even talking on tertiary education, but mere secondary education

-

Even with PTPTN, it is hard to allow rural kids to attend private uni

-

Politician, they will require knowledge, maybe not the most, but they will need sufficient and adequate knowledge to lead this country. As being MP is not about dealing with drainage or potholes, but drafting and passing laws and policies for this country

-

Deal with the most fundamental issue first, the education opportunity. This issue exists in all the countries even in US, where the young men enter military just to earn enough money to enroll into university, but we shall try to reduce the gap.

2. Should the protection of individual rights, take precedence over societal rights? -

IR refers to the liberties of each individual to pursue life and goals without interference from other individuals or the government Societal rights balance rights between individuals I agree with Dr Firdaus’s point on freedom of speech, where there must be certain limit on what a person could say, but the restriction of free speech in Malaysia is not only against different races and religions but also towards the government itself. For example, the implementation of Pengajaran dan Pembelajaran Sains dan Matematik (PPSMI), Tun Dr Mahathir had threatened to charge those who condemn or question PPSMI under Sedition Act. Akta MKN, the act applied throughout MCO, has granted the PM the power to decide and declare where ‘security area’ is and even though there are a number of members in the council, but PM can choose to ignore their advices, and under Clause 38, no action or lawsuit can be brought against the MKN In a given scenario, if more than a million Malaysians storm to KL to attend any kind of rally against the government, can PM declare the whole KL as ‘security area’ and send out military troop into KL? Societal rights, after balancing with individual rights, shall take precedence for the common good of the society, but we shall also ensure that societal rights will not be misused by the government itself...
