Look at the consonants [l] and [d] in Setswana to determine if they are separate phonemes, or allophones (contextual variants) of a single phoneme. State the generalization informally, but in the most economical way. You can prove phonemic status by finding minimal pairs. If you conclude they are allophones of a single phoneme however, describe the conditioning environment for the rule.

Where is [l] found? #__e, e__ɛ, e__a, a__ɔ, etc (2pts for the list of contexts) ɡeneralizationʔ before the followinɡ vowelsː [e], [ɛ] [a] [ɔ] [o] (1 pts for the generalization). The crucial part is noticing that these vowels are a group! Where is [d] found? a__i, #__u, o__i, u__u, etc (2pts) generalization? [d] is found before the vowels [i] and [u] (1pt). This is the more restricted environment. So again, this is a clear case of complementary distribution, where [d] is only found precedinɡ [+hiɡh] vowels and [l] is found elsewhere. [l] and [d] are allophones of a single phoneme. (2pts for this statement) i e ɛ

u o ɔ a

[l] [d] / __ V [+high] (2pts) Stating the rule the other way around is a little more complicated. [d] [l] / __ V [-high] (2pts) but still not terrible. Both [+high] and [-high] are natural classes of vowels....
