Capstone course required for all UB students. Course work is quite easy...

Description

UBC 399MNT-A: UB Capstone (Reg #) (Spring 2020 – 15-Week Session) University at Buffalo January 27th – May 8th, 2020 Course Syllabus Instructor: Email: Office: Norton 17 (UBPortfolio Lab) Office Hours: Course Description: The UB Capstone is the culminating experience of the UB Curriculum. The Capstone is not a seated class, but rather a digital space set aside for thinking, reflecting, and integrating elements of the program through the creation of a Capstone ePortfolio: a multi-media, web-based platform where students will gather and integrate their learning experiences at UB into a meaningful whole, demonstrating their growth and development as learners. Students will be able to keep (and modify) this ePortfolio as they transition into the job market, graduate study, or other endeavors. Please note that all students will be required to complete an orientation to the Capstone during the first week of the semester. All resources for the Capstone will be found on either UBPortfolio and/or UBLearns. In addition, your Capstone instructor may require periodic in-person meetings throughout the term. Virtual alternatives will be provided for students studying abroad while enrolled in the Capstone. Course Prerequisites: Students may enroll in the Capstone course upon completion of all UB Curriculum courses – or – during the same semester a student is completing the last of these requirements. Students who alter their enrollment in co-requisite courses (ex. dropping of a Pathways course while remaining enrolled in the Capstone) will not be able to successfully complete the Capstone course. It is essential that students recognize the Capstone requires completion of all other UB Curriculum components for a successful outcome in the course. For more information, please refer to the “Grading and Evaluation” section below. You should also review your Academic Advisement Report and consult with your academic advisor should you have questions about your Capstone eligibility. Course Requirements: Students must publish and submit all assignments by the posted due dates (see Course Schedule below for more information). Course Materials:  Capstone Assignments Guide  Capstone ePortfolio Orientation Videos [See the UBPortfolio Help and Resources ePortfolio]  Digication ePortfolio [accounts provided to students] through UBPortfolio  Modern Language Association (MLA) Quick Style Guide provided by Purdue University’s Online Writing Lab.  Technical and Assignment videos/podcasts by topic [See the Capstone ePortfolio Course Page in Digication for more information]  UBLearns Course Page for your section of UBC399

Student Learning Outcomes:

1

Upon completion of the UB Capstone, students will be able to:      

Articulate connections across different academic disciplines and perspectives. Adapt and apply skills, abilities, theories or methodologies acquired in one situation to new situations. Connect relevant experiences and academic knowledge. Demonstrate an evolving sense of self as learner. Integrate different forms of communication to enhance meaning (prose, sound, visual media). Apply your understanding of digital citizenship to create an academic capstone portfolio.

Grading and Evaluation: Students should familiarize themselves with the grading schema below. Up-todate grade calculations can be found on the My Grades tab of the UBLearns course page for each student; qualitative feedback can be located on the Assignments tab of the UBPortfolio (Digication) course page for your section of UBC 399. Students with questions or concerns about their grades should consult with the instructor promptly.

Where [UBLearns Submission] appears above, the assignment will be submitted through UBLearns; where [UBPortfolio Submission] appears above, assignments will be published and submitted directly through the ePortfolio system. For the final ePortfolio submission: if submitted without changes, your overall course grade will be determined from the previous assignment grades; if submitted with changes (these must be listed on your revision statement), the final ePortfolio will be re-evaluated in light of those changes (e.g. if only the foundations assignment has been changed, then only that portion of the grade can improve). On-time submissions for UBPortfolio assignments will be critiqued and receive timely feedback from the instructor in the form of rubric scores and qualitative feedback. Students will then revise their work and add them to their Final Capstone ePortfolio at the end of the semester. Students who drop, resign, or otherwise alter their enrollment in UB Curriculum coursework – required to successfully complete the Capstone – will not be able to earn a passing grade in the course. For more information, please review the Final Capstone ePortfolio rubric and the Course Prerequisites section of

the syllabus. You should also review your Academic Advisement Report and consult with your academic advisor should you have questions about your Capstone eligibility. Assignments: Capstone ePortfolio assignments can be completed in a number of different ways. For example, you could write an essay, or create a video, or share an infographic. The possibilities are up to you so long as you meet the criteria of each assignment according to the rubrics contained in this guide. Use the details below to help you craft your ePortfolio. If you are uncertain as to how to best complete a particular assignment for your ePortfolio, contact your instructor. Late Work Policy: Assignments submitted after the posted due date (see the “Course Schedule” section) will be accepted up to 48 hours past due for a 15% reduction of points. Feedback may not be provided for late work. Assignments submitted more than 48 hours late will not be accepted and will receive a grade of 0. Assignments close in UBPortfolio 48 hours after the deadline and will no longer permit submissions. Incompletes: Students are required to be familiar with the University’s policy on incomplete grades, outlined at the following address: http://undergrad-catalog.buffalo.edu/policies/grading/explanation.shtml Please note: students who drop, resign, or otherwise alter their enrollment in UB Curriculum coursework – required to successfully complete the Capstone – are not eligible for an incomplete. They are encouraged to resign from the course and enroll in a future semester. Incompletes are only granted after an in-person consultation with a Capstone Clinical Instructor and with the approval of UB Curriculum. Incompletes are rarely awarded and only in extenuating circumstances, not as a substitute for neglecting required coursework. Academic Integrity: Academic integrity is a fundamental University value and equally expected of students in the Capstone course. Through the honest completion of academic work, students sustain the integrity of the University while facilitating the University's imperative for the transmission of knowledge and culture based upon the generation of new and innovative ideas. The University at Buffalo’s Undergraduate Academic Integrity policy can be found at: http://undergradcatalog.buffalo.edu/policies/course/integrity.shtml Attribution and Citations: The Capstone requires the use of the MLA Style Guide for citations. For easy reference, please review Purdue University's Online Writing Lab (OWL) guide, which breaks down citation methods by category (e.g. text, websites, journal articles, audio recordings, etc.). Proper citation methods are part of digital citizenship and a component of academic integrity, and make up a component of your final portfolio grade for the Capstone course. Course Expectations: Students are expected to maintain an online presence, demonstrating active participation in this course in areas such as (but not limited to) emails, discussion boards, conferences, peer review, and through timely publication and submission of weekly assignments. Failure to maintain an online presence will prevent successful completion of the Capstone. Students are expected to maintain a respectful, professional tone in all online interactions as well as material posted to ePortfolios. The practice of appropriate Online Decorum is a necessary component of responsible Digital Citizenship as well as one of the non-quantitative learning outcome goals of the UB Capstone course. Failure to maintain Online Decorum may adversely affect student’s course grade or (in extreme cases) result in dismissal from the Capstone course as well as referral to student judicial affairs. For more information, please refer to the Academic Integrity section of this syllabus.

Fair Use Policy and Copyright Infringement: When adding photographs, videos, music or other media to your ePortfolio, please make sure that provide proper attribution. Documentation and guidance on best practices for attribution can be found on the Digication Course Page. Failing to provide attribution for textual or media incorporated into your ePortfolio will negatively impact your grade, and can be considered plagiarism. This includes (but is not limited to) course descriptions from the catalog as well as Pathway topic descriptions. For more information, please refer to the Academic Integrity and Attribution and Citations portions of this syllabus. Accessibility Resources: If you have any disability which requires reasonable accommodations to enable you to participate in this course, please contact the Office of Accessibility Resources, 60 Capen Hall, 6452608, and also the instructor of this course. The office will provide you with information and review appropriate arrangements for reasonable accommodations. http://www.student-affairs.buffalo.edu/ods/ Digication interfaces with screen readers such as Jaws and VoiceOver, with further support available through [email protected]. Audio course materials will be captioned or accompanied by transcript. Course Schedule: The Capstone course is organized by separate assignments that will provide the content and technical skills needed to complete the final project. Assignment descriptions can be found in the Assignments Guide for UBC399. Further, each ePortfolio assignment description contains general directions and guidelines in each respective section (ex. “Beyond the Classroom” tab has several suggestions and ideas for how to successfully complete the section). You should also review the featured Capstone ePortfolios located on the UBPortfolio website to view examples of successful student work for this course. Since the course is non-seated and delivered asynchronously, it is vital that students keep pace with weekly assignments to ensure timely completion of the Final ePortfolio. UBLearns assignments must be submitted to the UBLearns course page to receive credit; UBPortfolio assignments must be published to your ePortfolio and then submitted to receive credit. Each assignment is due by 11:59 PM on the dates listed below. Please Note: Last day to drop/add for Spring 2020 courses is February 3rd, 2020.
