UFC Gym Soho

In New York there’s many gyms but one I very interesting is in Canal street on the R line of the NYC transit. This gym is called UFC gym in this gym you have a lot of options that most gyms don’t really offer in this gym; In this gym you make your own schedule to see what fits for you either because of school or work. There’s classes such as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu with Gi and without Gi, Mixed Martial Arts, Muay Thai, Boxing, Kick Boxing and Fight Fit. Many people come here for different reasons and it’s either to lose weight, learn something new or just to release some stress. Everyone is welcomed even young kids as they have classes for kids at a certain time and day.

This UFC gym is small but it still gives you the feeling of being in a big gym as they have a lot of equipment such as heavy bags, treadmills, speed bags, pull up bars, weights and even their own octagon. As I entered the gym I saw a class I found really interesting and it was Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as I was observing the class I found out that it’s something I might really enjoy. This gym really makes you feel like you’re family as they treat you like family as I saw many people from different cultures getting along working out together or sparing with each other. “Now that I’m officially in the UFC and part of the new strawweight division.” (Paige

Vanzant Pg.159) Before in the UFC there was no female division as they never had one the UFC decided to make two new division just for the females so they can also feel welcomed for their own passasion.

After getting to know people in the gym I finally got a chance to ask the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instructor the instructor name is Andrew Franco. I asked Andrew how long did it take him to get his purple belt he replied with “ It took me 10 months to get my blue belt and then a couple years later I got my purple belt”. I also asked him how long has he been working in the UFC gym for “I’ve been teaching here for four years” he replied. As he told me how he loves teaching Brazilian Jiu Jitsu as it was always his passion since he was a little kid at the age of ten years old. He also told me how he would always go to competition to expand and learn new moves and submissions from other fighters.

Andrew inspired me to join the gym and to try out Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Joining this gym is great but it comes with a heavy price since the gym has a lot to offer due to the amount of classes you can take the prices start from eighty-eight dollars to a hundred a month but this does not include personal training as personal training is separate and start from five-hundred to a thousand dollars. If you have a job or just smart with your money and want to release some stress on heavy bags I recommend this gym. They also give you a day free trial to try out the gym if you like it or not and you will be given a tour of the gym and how every class works. As of today I only go to the gym for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and personal training with Andrew. Mark Mullen said “Jiu-jitsu is not a collection of moves. Jiu-jitsu is how to move.” While doing Jiu jitsu everything has to be in one motion has to be a bit fast as if it was a slow motion it wouldn’t be effect enough.

Within my second visit everyone that works in the gym already gave me the opening welcome that I saw during my first day at the gym and with the trainers showed me around again to get a better view around the gym. As they gave me advice on how to diet and how to do certain things in the gym and if I ever needed certain items from the gym that they have it such as vitamins, protein shakes, gloves/hand wraps, Gi’s and other type of clothing I can use while working out or training at the gym. Also during this second visit was my first time going for Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and at first it was hard because I was the new guy and really didn’t know what to do but they all helped me out told me how to apply certain submissions or how to escape and get to side control or get to half/full guard. Even with sparing they helped me told me what do and if I ever needed extra help to come a couple minutes before class starts and they will help me along side the instructor.

I also got a chance to speak with a personal trainer during my second visit her name is Karina Smith. Karina specializes in core strength and helps others with their journey to weight loss as she always has a busy schedule and really doesn’t have any free time due to work. Karina has been working in the gym for a good two years as she teaches one student every other hour. I asked Karina on how serious does she take personal training and she replied with “I take it very serious at certain times I don't give the student breaks as it helps them build more core strength but if I see the student about to pass out or look really out of it I give them a thirty second water break”. She was asked how much does she get paid by the hour she told me that it wasn’t really necessary to know how much she makes an hour but she gets paid good every week.

This gym has taught me a lot within the past three weeks it taught me that anything is possible even if you feel like that you don’t belong everyone that works there even the people that train here will make you feel like family. In this gym there's many different type of people all come from different religion and have different beliefs than each other but while in and outside the gym everyone is family. As my time in the gym I’ve seen many people struggle on how to put on certain things such as hand wraps or even putting on a Gi everyone helps each other no matter if you’re new to the gym everyone will make you feel like you have been going to the gym for years.
