UNPACKI NG THESELF PHYSICALSELF ACTIVITY VI Write your thoughts about these statements: You tend to experience these common problems caused by low self-esteem: 1. In your own perspective define what is beauty Answer: In reality, the word "beauty" describes the beauty of our character rather than our outside appearance. People nowadays, particularly teenagers, think that external beauty is the most important thing and they are not beautiful without external beauty. A person's beauty relies on his or her emotions, acts and character. If we say about our external beauty it lies in a natural face with a wonderful smile, without any use of cosmetics. It's nice to be stunning with a natural look, but our inner beauty makes us more beautiful. On the other side if we say internal beauty, it means nothing but our personality, our acts and our appearance in front of other individuals. So I believe that being happy and nice is true beauty. Being confident and outgoing. To be nonjudgmental and open to ideas. 2. Give at least 2 persons in your life whom you consider beautiful and explain what makes them beautiful Answer: For me, I consider my father and my mother to be the most beautiful people in world. My mother who gave birth to me and my father who’s always supporting me throughout my journey. My mom is our family's spiritual pillar. She offers the holding place for everybody's emotions and do her best to protect us from getting harmed. She worked hard and made sacrifices, so our lives would be better. Her limitations have made me a stronger person. Some of her choices may not have pleased me, especially when I wanted to be with my friends, but I think she just take me out of trouble. My mother's ears and eyes hear it all, and they see it all. She is always there when I need someone to talk with. It's great to have someone I can reminisce about all my life with. My mom also taught me to be a functioning adult as well. That was her work, and it would be very difficult to make it through the modern world without that. Next is my father, even he died 3 years ago, he will always be my favorite person and my ultimate bestfriend. He supported me in everything I do especially in school activities. My father show us so much love and accept us which help us foster a positive sense of self. Our strong father-daughter bond shapes my self-esteem, body image, relationships, and behavioral traits. That’s the reason why my mother and my father are the most beautiful people in my life.

3. Which part of your body do you consider beautiful, explain why? Answer: I consider my eyes being the most beautiful part of my body. It's the eyes that are the first thing I look at. They explain the facts to you. The eyes are really what draws you to someone attractive. You can sort of talk with your eyes so I think they're beautiful. With those eyes, I can communicate with someone without saying a single word. I love my eyes because as far as I know there's no such thing as ugly eyes. Also, not only can the eye tell us about a person's character, but it may represent the physical condition of the entire body. 4. I am Beautiful or Handsome because… I've grown up believing that I'm not beautiful. I had to deliver so much more than just a face or a body. I wasn’t a thing. I am a human. I was a well-rounded young lady. It wasn't until I got older that I understood how my features all blended to make me beautiful. I don't need people to remind me that I am beautiful, because I know I am beautiful. It is important for all girls to realize that they are beautiful. There is so much that makes us who we are, and being aesthetically pleasing contributes to none of it. I'm beautiful because I encourage myself to have emotions (good and bad). I am beautiful because I am true to what I say, what I do, and who I am. In everything and all, God put beauty, and we are all beautiful as we live through Him. Beauty comes from happiness and giving happiness to others. As a woman, my femininity and the intuition that only women possess make me beautiful. As women, we should not put ourselves in competition but accept our differences because we are all beautiful. I allow myself to question things that confuse me or don't feel right. I push myself to be educated and self-aware. I'm allowing love to control me. I have the courage to fight for my goals, the faith to wear clothes that reflect who I am on the inside, the urge to make art and the ability to support others. Lastly, I am beautiful because I have learned to respect my body for all it can do and what it is, instead of wasting time hating it for what it will never be. I took myself out of the race to get inside the box and found the beauty all around me that exists beyond those 4 imaginary walls.

ASSESSMENT VI Listen to “Mrs. Potato Head” by Melanie Marquez. 1. Explain what message she is sending in her music.

Answer: The song's title itself relates to cosmetic surgery. A attractive but highly insecure girl uses plastic surgery to change her face. With a potato head, you can take off the facial features and change it. This reflects that with plastic surgery they "take" their face and change it. Melanie wants to prove that in order to be attractive, all women are beautiful and don't need plastic surgery. Specific lines indicate that women feel that if they are "unattractive" they will not be loved, so they adjust to be loved. "Baby soft skin turns into leather. Don't be dramatic it's only some plastic. No one will love you if you're unattractive". This symbolizes the uncertainties of women who undergo plastic surgery. The line suggests that 'fixing your face' with plastic surgery will takes away your natural beauty. And also the line "it's such a waste when little girls grow into their mother's face, but little girls are learning how to cut and paste, and pucker up their lips until they suffocate." It's just so sad for me to hear that girls aren't content with their looks and want something about themselves to improve. Mr. potato head is simply the society, forcing people into plastic surgery and then hating them after it's done. 2. Discuss what lines that struck you the most. https://youtu.be/wkri1NUq9ro Answer:

Oh Mrs. Potato Head tell me, is it true that pain is beauty? Does a new face come with a warranty? Will a pretty face make it better?

The shape of your nose or the smoothness of your skin is so much more than beauty. In fact, beauty doesn't have much to do with these things at all. Beauty focuses on something that's important to life. The way we live and the way we love has to do with it. It has to do with the way we carry ourselves and carry those who can’t carry themselves. Your body is an artwork that needs not to be cut and pasted. We also have to accept our own individuality, and then we have a world where children have grown up enjoying each inch of themselves, never hating what they've seen in the mirror. We are all really starting to suffocate ourselves in this horrible, cruel way of hating what we see every day in the mirror, because everyone tells us that it is not the perfect type of beauty....
