HPS111 Psychology A: Fundamentals of Human Behaviour - Trimester 1

WELCOME Welcome to HPS111 Psychology A: Fundamentals of Human Behaviour. This unit aims broadly to make you think like psychologists; to reframe the way you engage with information, to encourage critical thinking, to reject unfounded assumptions about how things work and to make you dig deeper.

In doing this, we will cover the fundamental principles of the discipline of psychology, primarily from a "bottom-up", bi first perspective, to provide the bedrock upon which all subsequent studies in psychology rest.

To complete a major sequence in psychology you will not only need "knowledge" but you'll need to develop "skills". In ways skills are the most valuable things you'll learn in your degree, as in the workforce and in life, you'll rely more on w you can do than what you know. Life is not all pub trivia.

Knowledge The "knowledge" content of the unit will be covered in the weekly videos, a lot of this is about remembering and understanding content, so it helps if you can stop, rewind and replay content over and over again if you're missing it. T be augmented by the discussion board, where if you're still stuck you can ask a question, that explains where you're up and where you're coming unstuck, we'll give you that extra guidance to put you on track.

Skills We believe that the best context for you to learn skills are in seminars, in this context we expect you'll try things out, g them wrong, get immediate feedback, and in doing that get better. In particular, as most of you will be early in your de and all of you will be early in your tertiary studies in psychology, we'll be using the seminars to teach you skills in how t and use information according to the standards of our discipline. This means starting to learn how to recognise and rea scholarly evidence, learning how to argue from evidence, giving credit to those whose work you depend upon, and how write in the style of your peers.

If you have an enquiry that relates to the material of the unit, please post your questions in the CloudDeakin site for HP Personal matters can be addressed by me by emailing the Unit email address, listed below.

This Unit Guide provides you with the key information about this Unit. For the best chance of success, you should read carefully and refer to it frequently throughout the trimester. Your Unit site (accessed in DeakinSync) also provides information about your rights and responsibilities. We will assume you have read this before the Unit commences, and expect you to refer to it throughout the trimester.

This introductory unit explores the fundamental principles underpinning the study of human psychology. As such, it wil the definition and scope of the discipline of psychology; the primitive roots of our behaviour; the neurological structure processes that are responsible for our mental life; and the important elements in our adapting to the world as individu such as learning and intelligence. This unit will provide an integrated and challenging introduction to psychology as a science, while also providing trainin important skills for tertiary education as a whole through the seminar series. In completing this unit, students will gain insights into the science of behaviour, a mastery of important research and writing skills, and a strong platform for lear advanced topics in psychology.

Unit development in response to student feedback

Every trimester, we ask students to tell us, through eVALUate, what helped and hindered their learning in each Unit. Yo strongly encouraged to provide constructive feedback for this Unit when eVALUate opens (you will be emailed a link).

In previous versions of this unit, students have told us that these aspects of the Unit have helped them to achieve the learning outcomes:

● ● ● ●

Available staff, connecting with students via the discussion boards to ensure no one is left behind. Clarity of online resources (like transcripts and focus questions) Quality of the recorded "knowledge" videos The provision of captions for video content.

They have also made suggestions for improvement, and so this is what we have done:

Clarified the unit site structure, to make it easier to find resources Ensured materials are consistently accessible Provided more discussion content, to keep the conversation going beyond what is just essential. Added new knowledge checks to the end of every weekly module. Added new exam revision resources (practice exam, quizzes).

If you have any concerns about the Unit during the trimester, please contact the unit teaching team - preferably early i trimester - so we can discuss your concerns, and make adjustments, if appropriate.
