Syllabus This unit provides an introduction to global perspectives on conducting business in a global context. It explores the operational environment of international businesses; the core functions of global businesses; as well as global business ethics, responsible management and professionalism in the workplace. The unit will help students to broaden the scope of their thinking from a global perspective when planning and implementing organisational and business strategies and personal work ethics in global markets.

Introduction Welcome to Introduction to Global Business (IGB)! Over the course of 12 teaching weeks, we will provide you with an introduction to global perspectives on business today. We will explore how globalisation impacts the realities of doing business, and understand the roles of ethics, responsibility, and sustainability in a competitive, global environment. This unit will also help to further develop your communication and academic integrity skills, preparing you for the rest of your business degree as well as your future as a business professional. As “Scholars of Business,” with ideas and opinions worth sharing with your peers, you will be challenged to express your viewpoint on contemporary business issues and support your stance with persuasive arguments. As you will present your ideas and opinions in a variety of forums, you will in turn be exposed to and learn various interpersonal, group work, and communication skills essential for university and employment success in the ever-changing global business environment. Unlike most of your units, we do not have a face-to-face lecture every week and we do not use a textbook. Instead, we have a “flipped classroom” model. This means that all the learning materials you need are available on Blackboard, and through your Workshops. Each Module on Blackboard is broken down in to three categories: Pre-Workshop, Workshop, and Post-Workshop. You should take the time to go through all Pre-Workshop content each week prior to attending class, to ensure you keep up with the unit content. All students enrolled in Introduction to Global Business are required to do a Post- Entry Language Assessment (PELA) in the first week of class. We look at the results of this exercise to determine if you would benefit from the SUCCESS program. This program is offered by the Academic Communication Development area, with the aim of helping you develop your English language and academic writing skills. If you are selected to join this program, participation is compulsory. Failure to complete the PELA – or to complete SUCCESS if instructed to do so – will result in an Incomplete mark for the unit. If you do not understand any part of the Unit Outline, do not hesitate to ask your TA. Alternatively, the Unit Coordinator is available to assist on any unit related matters via the unit email address: [email protected]. Expect a response in one to two business days. Emails sent over the weekend will be answered the following week. We wish you well for the semester, and encourage you to embrace the unique opportunity this unit presents to you. We also hope that it is an enjoyable time and helpful in your introduction to university.

Unit Learning Outcomes All graduates of Curtin University achieve a set of six Graduate Capabilities during their course of study. These inform an employer that, through your studies, you have acquired discipline knowledge and a range of other skills and capabilities which employers would value in a professional setting. Each unit in your course addresses the Graduate Capabilities through a clearly identified set of learning outcomes. They form a vital part in the process referred to as assurance of learning. The learning outcomes notify you of what you are expected to know, understand or be able to do in order to be successful in this unit. Each assessment for this unit is carefully designed to test your knowledge of one or more of the unit learning outcomes. On successfully completing all of the assessments you will have achieved all of these learning outcomes. Your course has been designed so that on graduating you will have achieved all of Curtin's Graduate Capabilities through the assurance of learning processes in each unit.

Learning Activities As this unit is a “flipped” model, you do not have any face-to-face lectures. Every week before you attend your Workshop, you should review the online lecture slides, and complete any activities or readings under the “Pre-Workshop” section for that Module. This ensures you go to class prepared and ready to build on the knowledge you gained from the online materials. You should schedule a set time each week to complete the Pre-Workshop content for your following class, to avoid falling behind. You can also use that time to review any Post-Workshop readings or information that we provided, to help re-inforce the ideas covered in class. In total, this should not take more than 1-2 hours each week. Students who do not review the Pre-Workshop content each week will not be able to keep up in the Workshops. Please ensure you come to class prepared each week! This unit is highly practical. Workshops are interactive and meshed with current issues in global business. The Workshops also look at how you may communicate as a future businessperson in the fast-paced global economy. The Workshops will also provide important information about your assessments, and how to successfully complete them. You are expected to attend your Workshop each week. Please note that you cannot attend any other Workshop session except for the one in which you are registered. 

Learning Resources Library Reading List The Reading List for this unit can be accessed through Blackboard.

Other resources There is no set textbook for this unit. Reading materials are provided via Blackboard in the Reading List. Please complete all Pre-Workshop reading before attending your class each week. Workshops will assume that this has been completed, and will build on this knowledge rather than repeat it. Post-Workshop readings have also been set for some weeks to assist in your study and assessment preparation. Please refer to each Learning Module on Blackboard for details about the required readings for each week. The Curtin Library at Bentley provides a range of online resources that are available to help you develop your information literacy skills. These are designed to help you access the best information in an efficient manner. Do make use of these resources. The access point to all library resources is: http://library.curtin.edu.au/

4.

Discuss thebenefits, challenges, and implications for key stakeholdersif these recommendations are implemented.

Word Limit: At least 1500 words, with a maximum of 1800 words. This INCLUDES in- text citations, headings, subheadings, etc. Anything in the body of your paper is included as part of the word count. Don’t slip up! Make sure you do not go over the maximum word limit. A 5% penalty will occur for every 50 words – or part thereof- over the maximum word limit. This will be strictly enforced. Also, be sure to follow the advice and instructions provided in your Workshops with regards to the requirements for this assessment, including fonts and structure. A copy of the marking key for this assessment will be available under the Assessments tab on Blackboard.

2. Group Oral Presentation: 30% You will work in groups of three or four students to create a compelling presentation, delivered in your Workshop in Module Nine. Groups will speak for 10 minutes in front of the class, using a Wix Website that you created together as the basis for your presentation. The company you selected is currently a signatory to the United Nation’s Global Compact (UNGC), or considering becoming a member. The UNGC guides companies’ social performance. Like all signatories, your company wants to identify ways of improving compliance to two of the Global Compact principles. As part of an Executive board (i.e. a group of three or four scholars), review the information of your group members to develop the best recommendations to achieve compliance with two Global Compact principles. You will select these principles no later than Module Six. Consider the work of all group members as well as the feedback provided by your TA from Assessment one to come up with an original group approach. In Assessment Two, the Executive board will present the proposed unified approach to Local Network members to convince them this approach can be effective in achieving compliance with the two Global Compact principles. Your presentation, and supporting Wix site,should accomplish the following: 1. 2. 3. 4.

Review and presenta selection of business practices and/or approachesfrom your company that relate to the two principles of the Global Compact. Discuss both thepositive and negative lessons learnedfrom these business practices and approaches. Developbusiness practice recommendations, which will improve compliance to the two principles. These should be based on the review you have undertaken, and your understanding of the lessons learned. Discuss thebenefits, challenges, and implications for key stakeholdersif these recommendations are implemented.

For your presentation, your working group has been: l l l

Allocated a maximum of 10 minutes to speak. Each member must speak for an approximately equal amount of time. Provided with a computer, internet connection, whiteboard, and projection facilities that you may use in any way to aid in your presentation.

This is a professional presentation. Please give careful consideration to the way in which you present yourselves and your ideas, ensuring that it is appropriate for a business environment. Your presentation will be recorded. In order to be able to provide you with all possible marks, please ensure that you submit the following to your TA on presentation day: l

l l

Minutes of the group meetings reflecting all of your decisions, and each group member’s level of participation. All members are asked to review the meetings to ensure that they are accurate. Most meetings are conducted in your Workshop classes, and missed meetings will impact your mark. The link for your Wix website (sent BEFORE class). A reflection piece on your presentation, to be submitted in Module 10, after your presentation.

Make sure you have all of your documentation on the day of your presentation, and hand in your reflection piece the following week. Late submission penalties will apply for missed deadlines, which could eventually result in a 0 mark, per Curtin policy, so do not forget! All presentations will be made during the given dates in this Unit Outline. This is a group presentation and no extensions will be made withoutPRIORarrangement with the Unit Coordinator, and the provision of supporting documentation. Failure to present during your scheduled Workshop without making alternate arrangements with the Unit Coordinator will result in a Fail-Incomplete result for the unit. A copy of the marking key for this assessment will be available under the Assessments tab on Blackboard.

Students will have the opportunity to practice a sample case study in weeks prior to the assessment to assist in preparation for this task. You are required to attend the Workshop in which you are enrolled to complete the assessment, and any extensions should be made through PRIOR arrangement with the Unit Coordinator.
