Lawrence’s presentation was on the correlation of GPA and research experience and its effect on the predictability of an individual’s ability to complete a PhD. The group of study were Mayerhoff scholars and he found out that only 29.4% of Meyerhoff Scholars had a PhD completion and 70.6% did not complete a PhD. Lawrence was able to get a sample size of 490 students in which 285 (48%) were male and 255 (52%) were female. Race was also accounted for and it was seen that GPA had a greater influence when predicting whether an individual was likely to complete their PhD; while research experience did not have a profound impact when it came to Meyerhoff Scholars. The research done was to understand the factors that influence the success of Meyerhoff Scholars; specifically the underrepresented minority students when it came to PhD completion....
