3. USPF BORDERLESS EDUCATION ALTERNATIVE MODE OF LEARNING The University of Southern Philippines Foundation is offering alternative modes of learning to College and Graduate School students starting First Semester of School Year 2020 – 2021 amidst the threat of the COVID-19 pandemic in the safety of your homes: 1) Online Learning 2) Hybrid/Blended Learning 3) Flexible Learning, and 4) Traditional Learning.

Online Learning What does this mean? Learning will be 100% online. Teachers will conduct classes using the Internet and online learning platforms for the entire academic year. What do you need? Students need a desktop computer/laptop/tablet and stable Internet connection to be able to attend online learning classes. Parents and guardians need to supervise the students taking online classes.

Hybrid/Blended Learning What does this mean? Classes can be done either online, on site (in classrooms), or through modules. Both online and onsite classes will be SCHEDULED; however, onsite classes will only be conducted once allowed by the government. Modular distance learning refers to selfpaced and independent study delivered through modules. What do you need? Students will need a desktop computer/laptop/tablet and stable Internet connection for online learning classes. For modular distance learning, learning modules may be picked up or delivered through courier.

Flexible Learning What does this mean? Course content is delivered via blended learning and/or fully online courses. In flexible learning, learners are given more FREEDOM in customizing or personalizing instructional content, time, space, mode, and PACE OF LEARNING supported by technological and non-technological tools. What do you need? Students will need a desktop computer/laptop/tablet and stable Internet connection for online learning classes. Course materials/modules to be picked up and delivered for modular distance learning.

|3

Traditional Learning What does this mean? This is the "old normal;' BUT with social distancing and additional health and safety protocols. Classes will be conducted on site (in classrooms) but only when government allows this as part of the new normal. What do you need? Students need to attend classes and participate in discussions.

APPROACHES TO ONLINE LEARNING Online teaching and learning is faculty-delivered instruction via the Internet. Two approaches to online learning have emerged: synchronous and asynchronous learning. Online instruction includes real-time (synchronous) and anytime, anywhere (asynchronous) interactions.

Synchronous Learning Synchronous learning is where you take part in learning activities (such as webinars and virtual classes) simultaneously with your instructors and fellow students. It typically involves tools, such as: • audio and video conferencing • live chat • data and application sharing • shared whiteboard • virtual "hand raising" • joint viewing of multimedia presentations and online slide shows

Asynchronous Learning Asynchronous learning does not require you to participate in learning activities at the same time as your fellow students. Instead, you are given the opportunity to work through the course material at your own pace and according to your own schedule, audio and video conferencing. It typically involves tools, such as: • e-mail • threaded discussion • newsgroups, message and bulletin boards • file attachments • virtual libraries and online databases Asynchronous courses are still instructor-facilitated but are not conducted in real time, which means that students and teacher can engage in course-related activities at their convenience rather than during specifically coordinated class sessions. In asynchronous courses, learning does not need to be scheduled in the same way as synchronous learning, allowing students and instructors the benefits of anytime, anywhere learning.

While consistently high scores do not guarantee online learning success, consistently low scores are not meant to be a discouragement! Rather the questionnaire results will act as a measure of your current preparation compared to the skills that will help improve online learning success. Low scores in the readiness survey do not mean you are not suitable for learning online. Instead it might mean you are not yet ready for online learning. Contact the USPF EduTech to discuss your results and your educational objectives. Keep in mind that the questionnaire is intended to merely benchmark your present technical abilities and readiness skills. It should not be the sole determinant of your decision to pursue online education. For further information or to discuss your results please email or call your respective college (see Appendix: USPF Online Directory) with the results of your questionnaire along with your contact information (name, course, email and phone) and best time to reach you.

BALANCING RESPONSIBILITIES AND SETTING PRIORITIES The capability to balance your responsibilities is vital to a successful online learning experience. Learning how to set goals is the foundation to bringing your online education experience to the fullest value. Determine precisely what work is needed early in the semester, and do your best to prepare ahead. Do not hesitate to ask your instructor for guidance or support.

Managing Stress Strategies for managing course-related stress include: • Know your deadlines. These include timelines for the courses as well as deadlines and important events that occur elsewhere in your life while you are enrolled. • Plan ahead. If you know that a non-course-related activity will consume your time during a given week, do your course-related activities in advance. • Know your available resources, particularly technological resources, and have them at your fingertips when you work in the course. • Keep in touch with your instructor. If you're falling behind, let your instructor know right away, and ask him / her for help in planning how you'll catch up.

Student Accountability The further you progress in higher and continuing education, the more responsibility you will need to take for your own learning. Self-discipline means motivating yourself to pay regular and consistent attention to the work that needs to be done, and doing it without delay or procrastination. Even more than in a traditional course, falling behind in an online class can jeopardize your likelihood of completing and passing the course.

Self-Directed Learning As you explore the many learning avenues available, and begin to define your individual path, you will still need to work with your instructors to ensure that you meet the individual course requirements. It's still important to prove that you understand the subject matter and can apply what is taught.

Understand Expectations To meet the requirements of the course and the expectations of the instructor, you will need a clear understanding of those requirements and expectations. Instructors will provide a syllabus that acts as a contract between the instructor and yourself. Carefully read and comprehend the given syllabus.

Class Communication Online learning does not mean that you are learning alone. You will have a class consisting of instructor(s), fellow students, and perhaps others with whom you will interact. Your instructor will build a class environment through discussion questions, group projects, and other activities. You help build this classroom environment through your participation. Seeing and speaking to others is not a necessary component in getting to know someone. Through your messages and discussions, both delayed (asynchronous) and real-time (synchronous), you have the opportunity to develop personal and professional relationships. The classmates you get to know online may come from very diverse situations and can offer a wealth of knowledge and experience. Your fellow classmates and instructors provide resources, information and support. Look for areas where you may post reviews for books you have read on pertinent topics, links to online resources, and observations for specific topics. Within your ‘classroom’, you and your fellow classmates can build a collective knowledge base which may become invaluable even after your coursework is completed. You need to let your instructor know if you have technical difficulties or problems understanding something in the course. And, if you feel comfortable to do so, please post your question / concern to others. That way, if your classmates have the same trouble they are going to benefit too. To be successful in this environment, constantly seek ways in which you can best understand the material of the course. Become an active learner!

TECHNOLOGY CONSIDERATIONS As an online student, your computer becomes your primary interface to your course(s), instructor(s), and your fellow students. In order to effectively use this interface, it will need to meet certain minimal requirements. If your computer cannot perform the functions you need to complete a class, you will have to make the effort to upgrade your equipment. It is not required that you own computer equipment; however, it strongly recommended that you have a computer that will be available to you on a dedicated basis that will meet your personal study habits. Additionally, have a backup plan should your primary equipment fail or become unavailable. Your cell phone is not an adequate interface for performing the work for your online courses.

Suggested Computer Requirements A computer with the following basic specifications should be sufficient for online / flexible learning: • • • • • • • • • • •

Operating System: Windows 8.1 or higher | Macintosh OS 10.12 or higher Productivity Tools: MS Office 2010 or higher | Office 2011 or higher | Apache OpenOffice 4.1.7 Processor Type: Core i3 Processor or higher Memory: 4 GB RAM or higher Hard Drive: 500 GB or higher Browser: Chrome (v. 83.0.4103.116) | Safari (v. 13.1.1) | Firefox (v. 78.0.1) Adobe Acrobat Reader 9.0 or later Anti-virus program (updated regularly) Computer microphone and speakers Web Camera High-speed Wi-Fi connection
