Background of Project: Please provide a brief summary of how the project has transpired. Waste is one of four major focus areas for the operational sustainability of the University in 2021. The University has an internal goal of reducing the reported volume of waste to landfill by over 50% from 2019 data. In line with this goal a Circular Economy Action Plan is underdevelopment. The goal is also aligned with the Hobart City zero waste to landfill target.

Summary of Project: Please provide a summary of the project, including the tasks, roles, responsibilities and expected outputs. To achieve the ambitious internal goal of reducing the reported volume of waste to landfill the University requires more accurate data on the volumes of waste to landfill in outdoor skips. The project would involve a weekly outdoor skip bin waste audit. The student would be required to record the skip location, whether the skip meets Australian standards, whether it has the correct signs, estimate the volume of materials and check whether it is contaminated. The student would need to look inside the skip and take photos but not to enter the skip. The student would then be asked to compare the number of occupants in the building to the size of the skip and the volume of contents. The audit would include all outdoor skips on Sandy Bay campus and at Hobart sites that are accessible to students, including general waste, comingle recycling and cardboard skips. The project should include researching and reporting on best practices in waste management.
