Description

2 positive and 2 negative effects of Globalization in the Environment Sustainability factor By Paulina Garza Globalization is a term and concept we’ve all heard before – and it’d be no doubt and very much rational to understand that it has had various, different effects on not only our personal lifestyles but also the world as a whole. For the past century, globalization has become a dream come true for humanity: faster access to technology, improved communication, innovation. Now, not considering its essentiality in bringing people of different cultures together, it’s not only provided for us a new era of economic liberty and prosperity but it has also opened the door for us to an infinity of possibilities of development. The first step to the moon and certainly not the last. However, Globalization has its perks as well – and its impact on the environment is not only great but very much interesting. Bad news first: Negative effects of Globalization in the Environment ● increase in consumption —> increase in production —> environmental stress ● increase in transportation of goods —> increase in fuel consumption —> increase in pollution levels Green activists have claimed for so long now that globalization isn’t all flowers and sunshine but quite the complete opposite. It has led to a domino-like impact on the environment that scientists aren’t so sure anymore if it can actually be stopped or if it’s too late. Globalization has led to a major increase in the consumption of products, which has led to an increase in production of these products – which then has led to an increase in the stress on the environment. Globalization has also led to an increase in the transportation of these natural resources and products from place to place. Now, in order to move nowadays, you need fuel. An increase in the consumption of fuel, whereas we’re talking about planes, boats or trucks, means that we also have an increase in the pollution levels in the environment – our environment. And we’re not considering the fact that fuel puts a great strain on the non-renewable sources of energy (gas). Oh boy indeed. There’s good news though: Positive effects of Globalization in the Environment ● competition —> companies will follow environment friendly companies //

people will become more aware —> encourage companies more ● milder winters can reduce death rate // mosquitoes can decrease —> decrease in illnesses like malaria Not all can be so dark and gloomy, however. There can be many benefits, advantages or opportunities with what Globalization drags along. For example, we all know business is all about competition – and if certain companies take the lead in being environment friendly, what will the competitors do about this new competitive advantage? Follow right suit. Another good thing about globalization is that the climate change it brings can be beneficial. Milder winters, for example, can reduce death rate of the homeless or overall health issues (such as a stroke). In addition, mosquitoes will struggle a lot more to survive if it becomes hotter and/or drier, which means that a decrease of them will also decrease fatalities from mosquito-borne illnesses (like malaria). Of course, influencers within the most powerful nations and businesses all share a social responsibility and must remember that when they take action to either help or harm the environment, the world watches, and some people will respond in kind. Whether independently or with the help of others, corporations and governments can combine knowledge, forces and other resources to make gains that will benefit the planet. 2 personal conclusions ★ I never really realized the massive impact globalization had on the planet – one thing is to find reasoning behind every advertising, conscious video or social discussion. However, when it comes to actual research and seeing for yourself the gravity of the situation – it’s shivering. It’s something I understand as something that cannot be stopped, however, because we’ve reached an era in which we’ve grown dependent upon technology and the resources we find the most appealing (such as food or clothes). We’re going to have to adapt and find substitutes that can help balance out the results of globalization. ★ I honestly don’t think the world is going to end. I believe most of it is intelligently-created drama for marketing purposes. I’m not saying it’s not real, all I’m saying is that the world can’t end. But it can change. That’s what the from the universe to our very bodies do – they adapt.
