Utopia 1. What is the origin of the word “utopia”? What did it originally mean? What has it come to mean over time? The word Utopia originated in 1550s that came from Thomas more’s book Utopia that was published in 1516 in New Latin. It originally meant nowhere and over the years it became known as an any perfect place.

2. Investigate one example of a utopia, either an attempt made in real life, or a fictional description of such a society. Explain how the society functioned or was supposed to function. If it failed, explain why it failed. the Fruitlands: A Utopian Community. it’s an attempt of a utopian society by Bronson Alcott the father of the novelist and the poet Louisa may. It was founded in June of 1843 in Harvard, Massachusetts. Members of this community were against the ownership of properties, they also were political anarchists, believed in free love and were vegetarians. The group were not allowed to eat meat or use any animal products for labor. Fruitland failed because they saw that the place cannot provide enough nutriment to maintain their energy and wellness as most of the group fell sick because of this situation many of them left and the community concluded in December of 1843.

3. Explain the difference between a utopia and a dystopia. A Utopia is an imagined community or society that possesses highly desirable or nearly perfect qualities for its citizens, where dystopia is a community or society that is undesirable or frightening. It is translated as “not-good place.”

4. Provide a brief (6-8 sentences) account of Orwell’s political ideas prior to the writing of 1984.
