COURSE DESCRIPTION AND PREREQUISITES THE COURSE PROVIDES CONTINUED USE OF NURSING CONCEPTS IN THE CARE OF CLIENTS EXPERIENCING ALTERATIONS IN MENTAL HEALTH. THE NURSING PROCESS EMPHASIZED AS IT REALATES OT ALTERED PSYCHOSOCIAL INTEGRITY.

WELCOME STATEMENT The School of Nursing supports the mission of the Division of Health Affairs through programs that educate individuals to meet the health care needs of a culturally diverse society. These programs facilitate the development of competent practitioners, educators and leaders within an interprofessional environment, to provide holistic nursing care to individuals, families, groups, and communities. Integral to the mission, the School of Nursing is committed to fostering research that enhances evidence-based practice and service within the profession. Furthermore, community engagement that enriches health promotion, maintenance, and restoration is highly valued.

Online Synchronous Courses: These courses will be delivered fully online. There will be a designated class meeting time for real-time instructor/student interaction, which will be conducted remotely via online platforms from the safety of your home. This real-time interaction may be supplemented by the digital presentation of course content. Your instructors will provide you with feedback on assigned work, communicate with you electronically, and be available to meet with you as defined on this syllabus. . This includes information on self-screening questions, links to forms for travel and contact, etc. 1

Boilerplate language on self-screening and reporting is currently being developed. Face Covering Protocol: As part of the university’s ongoing COVID-19 mitigation efforts to maintain a healthy environment for all members of our campus community, anyone entering a campus building must wear a face covering that covers the mouth and nose. The covering must be worn in all hallways, public spaces, research labs, teaching/computer labs, libraries, classrooms, automobiles with a passenger, stairwells, elevators and common areas, as well as office spaces. In office spaces, when social distancing of 6 feet is possible and maintained, face coverings may be removed. Face coverings also are required in outdoor settings when safe social distancing and gathering practices are not possible. TEACHING PHILOSOPHY Content will be presented in a variety of ways, including, but not limited to lectures, class discussions, audiovisuals, computer programs, assigned readings, simulation and case studies, client care, pre and post conferences, role playing, and SELF-DIRECTED LEARNING.

Major Course Requirement/Major Assignment/Examination -Satisfactory completion of course objectives -A Minimum grade of "C" equal to 75 is necessary to pass the course. Any grade below “C” (i.e., “D” or “F”) is a failing grade. -Major comprehensive exam average must be 75. Exams/Tests/Quizzes In general, BSN exams/tests/quizzes are proctored on campus, including those administered for online courses. Exam dates are listed in each course syllabus, and students are expected to make arrangements to be present for the scheduled tests. In the event that students will be absent from an exam or quiz, they must notify their course instructor in advance. Failure to do so will result in the student receiving a zero for the missed exam or quiz. Should extenuating circumstances prevail, the student may request special consideration, which will be addressed on an individual basis. Makeup exams are not guaranteed. Standardized Exams Standardized exams will be administered at various times throughout the BSN curriculum. Relevant fees will be charged, usually along with registration, for the respective BSN courses. Most standardized tests are proctored. The use of recordings will enable you to have access to class lectures, group discussions, etc. in the event you have to miss a synchronous or face to face class meeting due to illness or other extenuating circumstance. Our use of such technology is governed by the Federal Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), UTRGV’s acceptable-use policy, and UTRGV HOP Policy STU 02-100 Student Conduct and Discipline. A recording of class sessions will be kept and stored by UTRGV, in accordance with FERPA and UTRGV policies. Your instructor will not share the recordings of your class activities outside of course participants, which include your fellow students, teaching assistants, or graduate assistants, and any guest faculty or community-based learning partners with whom we may engage during a class session. You may not share recordings outside of this course. Doing so may result in disciplinary action under UTRGV HOP Policy STU 02-100 Student Conduct and Discipline. ACADEMIC INTEGRITY. Other Course Information Mental Health Nursing Policy Statement related to Student Conduct: Students are expected to: -be prepared and attend lecture, simulations and clinicals. This is mandatory. -comport themselves with integrity in all activities pertaining to the BSN Program, whether in class, clinical, or preparation for such -adhere to the policies and procedures of the BSN Student Guide, and the UTRGV Academic Integrity Guidelines -students are responsible for their own academic honesty and are also responsible for reporting violations of academic honesty by others. -students who violate academic or scholastic honesty [including failing to report its violation(s) by others] will receive a failing grade in the respective course(s) and may not be considered for readmission. (UTRGV Scholastic Dishonesty Policy). -students will be required to abide by an honor statement for each test/quiz. -Students must adhere to UTRGV Student Conduct Code (HOP 5.5.2.). You may be dismissed from the BSN program if you violate academic or scholastic honesty. -refrain from classroom distractions. If your laptop or other electronic device is not being used to take class notes or follow class content, it too is a distraction. Students causing distractions will be asked to leave class and may be subject to disciplinary actions. -The use of any electronic devices, including laptops, cameras, voice recorders must be approved by the course faculty prior to class. The use of any unapproved electronic devices during a test/quiz review will result in the student receiving zero for that test/quiz -use UTRGV-assigned e-mail addresses for official course or program correspondence -Clinical dress code is mandatory and students are required to wear BSN UTRGV Polo-Shirts and dark slacks or Kakis for all clinical sites. ID badges will be utilized based on facility policy.
