Transitions within essays:

● Subordinating conjunctions ○ In an essay you may see these notes if the transition doesn’t work: ■ [gap] or [trans] ● Example: the sun was shining, so we went for a walk. ○ The “so” connects the two ideas in this sentence since they are related, but not the same idea.

● You must be careful of the “flow” of the transition because some words do not work with certain sentence structures. ○ “I like salt on my popcorn, but the movie was long.” ■ This doesn’t sound right, so make sure to reread your sentences when trying to bridge them in your essays. ● Sometimes there is no good way to bridge one sentence with another, and so you might have to use several sentences to transition your thoughts.

CR #9: Feminism and pornography

● This CR deals with the third wave of feminism (talked about a few weeks ago) and the “sex positive” aspect of that wave ● Ellen Willes “1981” coins the term “sex positive” ● In the 1970s there was a critique of pornography and was looked at very negatively because women were “used” and “sold out” without a say of where and how their image was used, but this movement was to protect the women who were in this profession or chose to later become part of it. ● what makes this study unique? ○ The way that the experiment is done, they are observing the people in their environment, and the fact that they are observing porn actors is out of the “norm” ○ There is not a lot on this topic in general as it is a taboo subject ○ They talk to the porn actors about what it means to them personally and the experience of performing ● What sort of conventions of pornography do they perpetuate and/or challenge? ○ In the beginning, everything was force paid, and now there is more a donation set up where you can get special offers and you are able to get more personal with them if they are willing to pay

○ It is an industry dominated by women now more so than it was back in the day when men dictated what, how, when, and where things were to be performed ○ They didn’t really talk about the “negative” side of the industry, the regulations, and other laws that are placed within this subject. It can get dangerous since there are not a lot of regulations on camgirls getting personal with viewers, tracking who is underaged, etc. ● The Stag film ○ Everything is done for the viewer and there would not be about a “couple having sex” it was more of performing one on one for the viewer ○ This changes the level of intimacy ○ This would be viewed as a positive for a third wave feminist as it empowers the female figure

● What is the overall perspective of this essay? ○ He seems unsure about this who subject. He sees both sides but doesn’t address the feministic standpoint either way ○ More positive, because they will point out some negative but then fight against them with positive facts ○ He seems to be more on the “sex positive” side of things (look at the last paragraph) ■

“of adult entertainment has defied the existing business model by allowing female performers to take full control over the content that they produce and the management of their commercial affairs. The camgirl genre could be seen to empower women within the industry, subverting traditional power relationships by compelling male audience members to seek the approval and acknowledgment of a female performer.”

Questions: 1. What is the penguin army?

a. This is the most “dedicated” fanbase and some performers create a marketing base around these fans (using personal sessions, toys, etc. to gain some monetary value) 2. Multiple choices (pick one answer): what is “peer-shaming” in the context of the camgirl site? a. When a model is shamed into acting out a particular scene for customers b. When members of a site ostracize other viewers in a cam session to punish their unaccepted behavior c. The actions of sex “negative” feminism to shames women who are either in the porn industry or who advocates for the rights of women in the industry...
