Common Concerns of Helpers Common Fears and Self-Doubts: Uncertainty and mistakes causing harm, Expectation to help everyone, knowing what to say, Conflict and confrontation, Setting boundaries with overly demanding clients. Transference: a concept and fear What transference look like: Distorted perceptions, idealizing, falling in love with you, unrealistic demands, anger Coping with transference: seek supervision, refrain from blame or judgement -> respond with understanding and respect, and observe and identify patterns in relationships Countertransference: a concept and fear What does countertransference look like: “I hope they don’t show up”, “I understand more than you know”, Going out of your way to make the client happy, Spending an extra 15 minutes with a client Ways to cope with countertransference: being aware, recognize “empathy fatigue”, Discuss in supervision, seek your own therapy. Clients’ Common Problematic Behaviors: Blaming, Denial, Dependent, PassiveAggressive, Intellectualize, Numbing Emotions, Maladaptive Coping How do we help clients exhibiting these behaviors? Respond, don’t react! -express observations mindfully and nonjudgmentally; be mindful of culture; Be mindful of tone, language, etc. to not give advice or demonstrate expertise or authority over the client.
