Veterans and Military Families The importance of resilience in regard to a veteran and their family is crucial. Providing them an opportunity to see how resilience can assist them in their daily lives. Some veterans have had a traumatic event occur to them or witnessed an event it will be their resilience that will be crucial to their healing. Once a veteran has left service these are other events can be the triggers to a downward spiral of events. "Resilience represents the ability to become better, not bitter; to bend but not break; to return to full function and potential after an internal or external shock; in short, to bounce back,” (Dees, 2011). The basic understanding of resilience can be a working solution to a veteran’s suffering. The fact is understanding resilience and its importance will be easy for some and difficult for other. A good definition of resilience for a veteran to understand is Physical training (PT) for the mind. The training will be loosely based on comprehensive soldier and family fitness relying on the five dimensions of strength physical, emotional, social, family and spiritual. Typically, a military veteran is apprehensive to new things, therefore it will be critical to slowly teach them how resilience is important. The fact that most veterans learned their chosen military occupational specialty (MOS in the United States Army) by crawl , walk, and run or step by step demonstration it will be beneficial showing a veteran how the concept of resilience can assist them in their struggles. Gratitude is something veterans struggle with and it can be as easy as looking for one good thing and reflecting upon it. This simple exercise will be the building block of understanding resilience. The most important thing about being resilient is connection and being able to rely on one another. Showing a veteran, the way to respond to a person in a way to accentuate that person’s good news help them with connection.

VETERANS AND MILITARY FAMILIES Resilience is a vital skill to assist a veteran and his family with transition. Clearly, defining resilience will be crucial to assist the veteran in understanding what we call PT for the mind. Using the five pillars of strength as a blueprint to assist veteran’s and their family members a counselor will be able to shoe the importance of resilience.
