1.0 INTRODUCTION TO THE LAMAN HIKMAH LIBRARY Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) was established as a result of the re-branding of Kolej Universiti Teknikal Kebangsaan Malaysia (KUTKM) Section 8 of the University and College University Act 1971 (Act 30) under the Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka Enactment (Pemerbadanan 2007), which was gazette as P.U. (A) 45/2007 on 1 February 2007. The UTeM Library has been in operation since 10 June 2001, serving 348 pioneer students at the Temporary Campus in Taman Tasik Utama, Ayer Keroh, Melaka. On 5 September 2005, Laman Hikmah Library was relocated from the Temporary Campus to the Industrial Campus, which began its operation on 12 September 2005. With an area of 2,229 square meters, Laman Hikmah Library could accommodate approximately 400 users. Moreover, the Main Laman Hikmah Library (432 square meters), provides a seating capacity of 120 users which caters to the needs of students from both the Faculty of Electrical Engineering (FKE) and the Faculty of Electronics and Computer Engineering (FKEKK).

Laman Hikmah Library has also opened a branch in the City Campus, Jalan Hang Tuah, Melaka, on 1 October 2007, to provide reference facilities for the post graduate students at the Institute of Technology Management and Entrepreneurship (IPTK) as well as the University. On 8 July 2009, Laman Hikmah Library moved its location from the Industrial Campus to a new building at the Main Campus, Durian Tunggal. It started its operation on 29 September 2009. It was closed on 16 January 2019 and merged with Technology Campus library. 1

Laman Hikmah Library at the Main Campus (10,063.68 square meters) provides a seating capacity of 500 users at any one time. The Industrial Campus Library was closed on 3 September 2009. On 21 April 2011, Laman Hikmah Library opened a branch at the Industrial Campus, Hang Tuah Jaya, Melaka to provide reference facilities for the students from both the Faculty of Mechanical (FKM) and Faculty of Technology Engineering (FTK). With an area of 2,229 square meters, Laman Hikmah Library can accommodate approximately 400 users.

Laman Hikmah Library has a total collection of more than 115,000 titles including 13 subscribed database titles which includes engineering materials related to the core areas of Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering , Engineering Technology, Information & Communication Technology and Technology Management & Technopreneurship. In addition, there are also collections of other scientific fields such as Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics, as well as general readings.

In order to suit with user needs, library provides services such as Online Renewal, Inter Library Loan, User Education Programed, Library Exhibition, User Advisory Desk, Order n Collect and many more. To support research activities, we also provide Information Packaging and Research Appointment services in line to serve the 2

University. Other than services, we have many facilities such as discussion rooms, viewing rooms, carrel rooms, iPad, hover board and etc. We also offer room and area for rental to University and public.

They also concerned with Millennials and Y Generations by our new concept which are more leisure, interactive and conducive for user to optimal use of the library as a meeting place and as a second home. In future, Laman Hikmah Library will become a pioneer among academic Library which open 24 hours to user at Level 1.

3.0 ANALSIS OF LAMAN HIKMAH LIBRARY 3.1 SERVICE OFFERED BY LAMAN HIKMAH LIBRARY

A. CIRCULATION SERVICES Borrowing Only individuals registered with the Library may borrow books. Books can be borrowed at the Circulation Counter or Self-check Machine. Borrowers will be given a slip for reference. Borrowers are encouraged to view their borrowing transactions online.The borrowing of all Media Resources like cassette video, cassette audio, slades and digital sources like video CD, CD-ROM, diskette and DVD should be done at the Circulation Counter. Returning Library materials borrowed must be returned to the Circulation Counter or by book drop which is available 24/7 before the due date. Fines will be imposed for items that are overdue. Students should return all library materials when they withdraw, discontinue, defer or graduate from the university programme. Reminder/Overdue notice Reminders will be sent to staff only.  

Overdue reminder notice will be sent to staff one week before the due date. After one week of the due date, the first reminder notice will be made and 1 week grace period will be given. Fines will not be imposed during this period.



The second reminder notice will be issued one week after the first notice, and fines will be imposed.



The last reminder notice (third) will be issued two weeks after the second notice, and fines will be calculated accordingly.

Renewal Books can be renewed two (2) times only. Renewal can be done at the Circulation Counter or through online and should be done before the due date. Library materials which have been borrowed may be renewed provided that they 6

have not been reserved by another user and have not had any over due date or fines. Reservation Only on loan books may be reserved. Reservations can be made at the Circulation Counter or through online. Reservation notice will be posted on the notice board. Materials reserved will be kept for one week only. The failure to collect will result in the materials being returned to the stacks. Lost or damaged Items If a material is lost or damaged, an immediate report should be made to the Circulation Counter to enable appropriate action. A grace period of two weeks will be given to borrowers to search/replace the materials. If the items are still missing, the borrower should replace the items in one of the following three (3) ways including overdue fines (if imposed). 

Replace the book: the latest edition;



Pay the current cost together with RM25 service cost;



If the cost of the old item could not be determined, locally published materials will be charged RM40 and imported materials RM150 in addition to the service cost of RM25.

B. REFERENCE SERVICES User Education Program (PPP) The objective of this program is to teach the library skills to users, and how to use the services provided by this library. This program is highly recommended for new and final year students. The class will be conducted by librarians following a fixed schedule or upon request. Inter-Library Loan Service (ILL Service) Its implementation is to serve new reference materials in that particular IPTA/IPTS. In order to process the applications, users are required to fill in the forms of the inter-library loan which can be obtained from the reader advisory

desk or circulation counter. The status of the applications will be notified through e-mail or phone. Computer for Internet and work-related purposes Library also provide computer for user who want to surf the internet or doing their assignments provided in media area. All the above databases can be accessed by library users through the library website. Exhibition on current information The exhibits aim to provide knowledge and awareness on the recent and updated information from time to time. New Material Corner New materials will be exhibited on a continuous basis and the materials can be borrowed through the standard practice of a borrowing process. A synopsis of each new material is to be exhibited on the library notice board. Viewing Activities Only academic, documentary programmes and news are allowed. This activity includes selected television programmes, Astro and multimedia materials 8

available in the Library collection. Selected videos viewing programmes are scheduled monthly at the library. Lectures or student can request to view the programming schedule. C. LIBRARY AUTOMATION Background of Automation Section The Automation Section is a section under the Digital Services Division (BPD) which is one of the most important parts of Library management towards digitization. This section comprises the Library System & Applications Unit and the Web & Multimedia Unit.

In addition, this Section is also responsible for ensuring that the Integrated Library Management System (KOHA), ICT equipment, portals, systems & internal applications, EZproxy servers and computer networks work properly.

The main objectives of the Automation Section are as follows: 1. Ensure Integrated Library Management System works well for users. 2. Ensure the library has applications and hardware that meets current needs. 3. Ensure that library staff are knowledgeable in using library systems and applications. System Used by UTeM The Integrated Library Management System Library page (PLH) has been using the KOHA system since 2019. It is an open source Integrated Library Management System. The system has been developed in accordance with library protocols and standards such as MARC 21, UNIMARC, Z39.50, SRU / SW, SIP2, SIP / NCIP to ensure that it is compatible, functional and integrable with other systems used.
