Walmart capstone topic...

Description

Solicit feedback from the class on final project topic ideas here. Include the industry, the firm and the general threat or opportunity that you wish to address with your strategy plan that you will be developing in SBA. Read each posting and critically think about the feasibility of such a study to be supported extensively with data and information. The environmental scan is a part of the strategic business plan you develop for the company of your choice (capstone project). So you do it for the company of your choice, as you need to identify issues about the company and the external environment it is in, that is a relevant industry sector (from global perspective and with consideration of ethical decision making). The company needs to be your focus to use all tools, as in the individual case analysis, and to recommend the strategy for it, and strategy implementation (functional strategies) and evaluation and control process. The strategy recommendation depends on the strategic problems observed and identified through the tools used in the Environmental Scan analysis. So please remember that the topic is your company, and the issues addressed in the recommended strategy are the strategic problems to face in your project.

Industry: Retail The Firm: Walmart

There is extensive data/available to develop a strategic business plan/strategy recommendation.

General threat: - Low pay and poor working conditions - Competition from retailers such as Target, Costco, Amazon; offering lower pricing, higher quality pricing, better customer service and more enjoyable shopping experiences.

Weaknesses: -Numerous lawsuits related to its treatment of employees, including discrimination, unequal wages, unfair promotions, unpaid overtime, poor benefits and poor work environments. This has caused the retailer significant money as well as tarnished its brand reputation. -High employee turnover and a lack of motivation among existing employees due to this lack of social responsibility towards its workers. This also reflects on the company’s image.

You are correct that there is a wealth of options when it comes to identifying both threats and opportunities for a company such as Walmart. It always concerns me that I know these issues to be genuine and real ones for the retailer however, a company such as this does not always feel the same motivation a smaller company may to correct certain things and I have wondered if Walmart is one of them. At this point they have such a huge piece of the pie in their industry and motivation may not be as present to correct the manner in which they manage their human capital. My sister has worked for them for over 16 years and I have been astounded by some of their policies and practices and the overall difficult nature of even nailing down their policies. Obtaining an employee manual is near impossible, as she has attempted several times when I inquired following some unfair practices I was being told about. Right now, I do prefer Target

but their presence and number of locations just does not compete with that of Walmart. If they continue to expand their locations, Walmart could find themselves in a position to have to make some more strategic moves but beyond that, it would be difficult for anyone to truly give Walmart a run for their money. That all being said, their treatment of employees mirrors their "they are replaceable" attitude (opinion) and it would be a smart decision for them to try to change their reputation in that area by changing the dynamic and culture that has developed among the organization. Good luck. Walmart is definitely one if those companies with a good and bad reputation. Known for those low prices but also known for their poor treatment of their employees. You are definitely taking on a challenge but there is a lot of great information on them out there....
