Description

During fall 2019, my main goal for HMD 101 was to simply manage to enroll in the class. Unfortunately for me, HMD 101 seats sell like hotcakes and I made the mistake of not enrolling in the class immediately after I received my schedule. Now that I’ve managed to actually securing a seat, my goal for this class is to take good notes that are appealing to me, stay on top of all of the deadlines, and be attentive in class. I don’t have much practical experience in hospitality, so I want to do my best in class to absorb the information on what the hospitality industry is and how it works. I can’t do that if I become lazy or focus more on taking superficial notes rather than listening, so my major goal boils down to “be present.” My goals career-wise are to start a small art business while working in the service industry, which is why I’m double majoring in drawing and hospitality. The modern way for independent artists to make a living is to freelance through commissions online and to sell merchandise such as stickers, art prints, and enamel pins. My main goal in my art career, for now, is to strengthen my technical art skills, then work on building merchandise. My goals in my hospitality career are to start getting involved in the Las Vegas hospitality industry, and then eventually branch out to other locations such as New York, Canada, and Thailand. Since I want to travel the world, another major goal is to learn about international tourism, but I love the entertainment industry in Las Vegas, so I plan to get my foot in the door here and appreciate everything it has to offer before I start traveling. I hope to learn about the roots and history of the hospitality industry, especially its history in Las Vegas. I know that food and beverage are a part of it, but I also understand that hospitality has a large emphasis on providing experiences. I think that creating the experience of Las Vegas is extremely interesting and important to learn about, especially since I live here. I would like to eventually go into tourism, so I plan to learn more about the tourism industry, how it works, and how to be a good provider to tourists. I’m extremely interested in Asian tourism, but I believe this class is going to probably teach me overarching themes of hospitality rather than specific regional aspects. This class is going to help with my career because it’s going to form my base of hospitality knowledge. I plan to build on the information I learn in this class, allowing me to gain the knowledge needed to pass upper-division hospitality classes and get my foot into the practical world. My parents don’t allow me to work, so I will be using the information and skills I learn in this class to help convince them of the benefits of working - or taking an internship - as soon as I can. What I learn about hospitality will also apply to my art career since the main purpose of creating art is to create a dialogue. Also, the process of creating and selling art often involves providing your services to people, which mirrors the service aspect of hospitality. Essentially, I’m going to use what I learn in this class to become more knowledgeable about how to start my own career in Las Vegas' hospitality industry, but also to help build my own small business....
