Edward Snowden https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UIhS9aB-qgU 2 methods of encryption that are generally used: key escrow & end-to-end encryption development of more usable security 2 officials who have jeopardized US security: Michael Hayden & Keith Alexander (directors of NSA) o elevated offensive operations (attacks over the defense of our communication) Govt has been prioritizing efforts on information collection Many large companies already collect data (third party); govt already collects their own information; but then the govt. can come in and ask for that extra information collected by these large companies Encryption does work!! o Encryption technology, even if imperfect, has the potential to raise the cost of surveillance to the point where it no longer becomes economically feasible for the government to spy on everyone Cyberstalking Documentary Case 1: Brown and Martin were planning new life in Jamaica (when vicious campaign needed them to have 24-hour armed protection) o Emails by tormentor claiming to murder him, rape and kill wife and child o Graham came in touch with Canadian-Jamaican photographer that he knew in Kingston o Both couples grew close friends and opportunity arose for them to work together (his friend was keen them living closer to each otherled to a heated argument) o This argument led to a strange response from their friend with emails/pics (pictures of people who were horribly mutilated) o Stalking continued back to London (harassment, threats, posed on education website saying the daughter was HIV+ o He began a countdown in his website if they haven’t left Jamaica, they were going to be killed; with 3 red crosses (one for each member) o Publishing hurtful, racist things about family on internetmany were reading them and then they sent the family emails as well Case 2: Ankers had sex with work college who launched an online vendetta against him o Emails were being to sent to people who he worked with saying that he was lying about his application, who he was, he was gay etc. o Office partydrank too muchhooked upwent about normal business the Monday of o A lot of time passed until she emailed him, saying she was in the area and that if he wanted to meet up with her againhe said no, they should go about their own business (she wanted a relationship) o She sent him an email 8-9 months later saying he need to go to an STI clinic since he had given her chlamydia o The stalker knew where he stayed, sending letter alleging he was having affairs, tampering with cars Social Media Experiment Purpose: how easy it will be to get personal information from strangers All information was received by searching their social media posts, by searching for closest media from his location

             

Amanda Todd Video Would go on webcam to talk to new people (called many things, wanted to flash) A year later, she didmsg on Facebook (didn’t know him)Threatened to expose her if didn’t put on a show (Said he knew her address, family, friends, etc. ) Christmas break, knock at door (it was police)went into depression, panic, etc (got medicated) Year later, guy came back with new info about her o Lost her friends, respect, no one liked her, name called, judged, etc Started cutting, moved schools again Started talking to old guy friend, led her on (he had a gf), told her to come over, and she did … o Hooked up, she thought he liked her Got a text a week later “get out of your school” o Him, his gf, and 15 others came (Confronted her in front of people from her new school) Girl threw her to the ground, punched her, entire scene was filmed / She took blame for his mistakes Her dad found her and brought her homeshe drank bleachwent to hospital Once she got home, all social media posts about her was all about hate/she deserved it, etc. Moved to another city (mom)didn’t want to press charges 6 months later, pictures are still being posted of bleach, clorex, ditches tagged her in it cutting, constantly depressed, overdosed again died at home, cause of death not released Cyberbullying Laws in the US http://www.ncsl.org/research/education/cyberbullying.aspx Cyberbullying: the willful and repeated use of cell phones, computers, and other electronic devices to harass and threaten others o Most common methodsIM, chat rooms, e-mails, messages Cyberbullies can quickly spread messages and images to a vast audience while remaining anonymous...
